The S1 arrived this morning, and setup was simple. Since it replaced a Bryston BDP-1 and an Auralic Vega DAC it freed up a rack space, and a power cord.

The unit is nice and heavy, while the external power supply is relatively light. The Shunyata Sigma Digital power cord was tipping it over, so I had to reroute the cord, and Velcro tie it to a rack post. Now it is nice and stable.

Initial impression is the sound is very good. However, this will really have to be judged tonight since now the windows are open and there is too much neighborhood ambient noise interfering with it.

I need to get comfortable with the app. While I used to complain about the bugs in the mPod app for the Bryston, it was much more intuitive. For example, there was an option to play all files in a directory. I can't find an equivalent in the Lumin app. Even worse, I can't find how to delete a playlist.

I am sure this is just the learning curve, and I know I will be having fun tonight.

Bud - Congrats!!

it's all there what you want to do. Let me know if you want me to email you a video.

Mike, got the videos. Thanks. Your app appears different than the Lumin app I downloaded last from the App Store. I will check and see if there is another version there.

The picture is my USB drive. The directory Classical contains numerous sub directories, each one is a CD. I want be able to play all files in the Classical directory.

It looks a little different because you are using a hard drive I suspect and not a NAS or L1. If I plug in my Western Digital hard drive, I get directories like you now.

Typically, you want to have your music stored as:

Artist/Album/Song

Do you have it stored as genre first?

It is on the drive as genre, artist, CD.

For example, Rock->Led Zeppelin->CDs

Congrats Bud! I've had mine running since yesterday morning. The darn thing is so revealing but not fatiguing at all.

Hope you have fun tonight listening!

Thanks Mike. It is very revealing, and sounds great. The musical detail is there but not as sharp as with the Vega DAC. However, I am very nervous there might be an issue either with it, or my speakers. Earlier I was listening to a Shostakovich string quartet, and at certain point the the tweeter sounded like it was distorting the violins, but it was rare. I switched to Holy Cole, and it is fine, but sometimes a trumpet sounds rattling. Of course, there is the possibility I am hearing it as it was really recorded. After breaking my speakers last summer I am very gun shy about strange sounds from the stereo.

Anyway, I have rest of the night and tomorrow to troubleshoot any issue, or decide everything is fine.

Bud - Hope all is well. I have not seen/heard anything that resembles the two instances you reference. Keep us posted.

Congrats Bud!! I think you are going to love the S1. It certainly has gotten rave reviews. I'm sure you will figure out the features with time and a little help from your friends! :)

Enjoy,
Ken

Hi Bud,

Just read your latest comment. I hope everything is ok with both the S1 and S5. Please keep us posted.

Best,
Ken

Bud,

How was day 2? I did not get much time today to sit and listen.

There is "that thing called taxes" and I'm late sending the papers to our accountant. Glad I got the S1 prior to getting my bill - ouch!!!

Mike,

I have it running in my secondary system, where it replaced a Bryston BDP-1 and BDA-2 DAC. Anyway, it sounds great. I am currently playing all 15 string quartets by Shostakovich, and, as you said, it is not fatiguing at all. Just very clear and musical. I am getting used to the app so that helps.

Congrats on getting the S1.

Perhaps try those again and see if the symptom is repeatable after burning in the S1 for a few days. Please make sure the S1 volume is 100%, Analog Audio Output is Normal, De-Emphasis is Off, Invert Phase is Off. Although it shouldn't be related, you may also try different resampling settings.

I guess the next thing to try is to switch between the balanced and unbalanced outputs of the S1. Then try different inputs of the pre-amp (I knew that someone concluded a music player is faulty only to discover the culprit to be a faulty input on the pre-amp). Finally, consider switching the left/right speakers and see if the symptom is the same.

I once had a satellite speaker (for AV use) that developed a rattling sound only at a specific frequency. Of course every case is different. Hope this helps.

The Lumin S1 is now in the main system. Even though everything is warming up, it sounds great. Running it for two weeks in the HT system helped break it in.
