Although there's Lumin L1 for ease of use, power users may opt for a powerful NAS for use with Lumin.

Here's the latest recommendations for choosing NAS:

1. Must be able to install and run MinimServer
http://minimserver.com/installing.html

2. Either Synology or QNAP

3. Must use Intel CPU, not anything else

4. Comes with or upgradeable to 2GB RAM or preferably more (certain NAS models come with less AND does not have RAM sockets for user-installable upgrades - avoid those)

Recommendation 3 and 4 are due to requirements of running Roon Server (if desired)
https://kb.roonlabs.com/Roon_Server_on_NAS
(Note: Roon requires really powerful hardware to run well - CPU, RAM, storage, etc. The models mentioned below are probably the absolute minimum.)

Here's the procedure to add RAM to Synology DS216+II:

Here's the procedure to add RAM to QNAP TS-251: (Note that TS-251A is newer)

Thank you for this post. I am actually shopping for a different NAS and the QNAP I was looking at does not have an Intel CPU. You might have saved me from buying the wrong product.

We've just purchased a new NAS for internal use and exhibition - QNAP TS-453Bmini-8G. This is just FYI - not a recommendation (especially since some users prefer Synology user interface), as users may want to know what we use internally.

The Intel Apollo Lake Quad Core Celeron J3455 CPU (1.5GHz - 2.3GHz) used in this NAS is quite fast for a low-power low-budget CPU according to this:
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/midlow_range_cpus.html

Tested Roon Build 223 on this NAS for DSD256 upsampling with 7th order CLANS. With Parallelize SDM enabled, processing speed is 1.7 or higher (usable). With it disabled, processing speed is below 1 (unusable).

Peter - Many thanks for this information!

It seems Roon (running Roon Core on a computer) does not support UPnP NAS drives like the L1. Do you know any way to make this work? At the moment, we use the L1 with the Lumin software as one option. For Roon, we use another external drive plugged into the Roon core computer and the Lumin D1/M1/T1/U1/S1 as an output device. It would be nice to use the L1 with ethernet to play with Lumin software or Roon.

Thanks in advance!
Mike

Peter - Thanks for your response! However, I am NOT looking for the L1 to run Roon Core...only to be used as a Roon storage device.

To use L1 as a storage device only, simply plug the L1 into the USB port of a computer (that runs Roon Core). L1 will be seen as a standard USB HDD in the computer.

It is not possible for the L1 storage to be accessed by Roon Core via network because L1 does not have the network file system Roon needs.

I really like my QNAP TVS-471 running with the i3 and 16 gb ram.
I run both MinimServer and RoonServer from the same NAS and they work great with a large database of music files.

I have my Lumin U1 a very short time. Have not got around to Minimserver but it works very well with my Synology DS716+. I had JRiver with music servers previously and also now use the NAS (vs. local hard drives) for those. I have dbPoweramp on my old PC to re-tag the artwork (mainly for DSD dsf files). Am in process of re-tagging.

The re-tagging is mostly dsf files (and perhaps some 24-176 files from DSD files). For example, if I have Bob Dylan's 'Blonde on Blonde' and named the jpg file 'BlondeonBlonde.jpg' the cover art doesn't pick-up. If I rename the jpg file to 'folder.jpg' and then edit the ID tags of the songs (for the new folder.jpg file), the cover art gets displayed. So I guess my question is what will MiniMserver do to fix that? I have JRiver on a couple PCs and a couple of music servers and it displays the cover art either way. I just figured that once I'm done with re-tagging, then I'll just copy from the NAS to back-ups and then be done with it.

I basically got the Lumin U1 a few weeks ago. Was not ready for it (was dealing with lightning damage crap from an insurance co), but a deal came up on a lightly used one that I couldn't pass up. I had the files on the NAS but not under the 'Music' folder and I had not done the Media Server app on the Synology NAS. So I did that and the folders showed up. Due to the stuff going on, I didn't even get to play music all that much and just started down the road of experimenting to figure out how to fix the problem. So I'm still in the learning stage of dealing with it and appreciated all the input.

So I guess my question is what will MiniMserver do to fix that?

Album art identification from a music file or folder is the job of the media server, and the ones came with NAS are known to be less than ideal.

Your case may match one of the MinimServer supported scenarios, but you'll have to try it out to determine if it really fixes the problem(s) you encountered:

Please install MinimServer, no matter what.

Thanks - I've done that now. MinimServer now shows up above my Music Folder (see below - ignore the two things above Minimserver - had my files there for JRiver and then installed the media server package and moved all the music files under music). What next?

Also, while not related, I noted when I got my Lumin U1, firmware 8.03 was available. Have not done that. My DAC will do double DSD via USB and also DoP over any of the digital inputs. I did not install 8.03 as I was not sure if that would wipe out my ability to do (single rate DSD via) DoP. Will upgrading the firmware eliminate the ability to do DoP?

Thanks so much.

PS here's the pic of what the Synology looks like now (forgot that)

I've started the process of re-scanning via minimserver. I guess I'll find out what it does or doesn't do tomorrow.

If the U1 USB output is not connected, all other outputs should still be able to output DoP.

Phil A...you can post a question on the minim server forum and Simon Nash..who is the creator of minim server....will answer you directly. He, as well as Peter...was a huge help a couple of weeks ago with a self created problem i had..Great professionals....both..
