Lumin Questions...

Thanks. I will try the 'press and hold' method tonight when I get home to see if another set of options apears on the Classical dir. Since I am using the USB attached drive, the default options are not quite the same.
Bud if you're ever curious about an L1, I have mine I would be happy to send you to try.
Right, with a direct USB connection only "Folder View" is supported, instead of the usual mode of browsing. For more flexibility consider trying the L1 or MinimServer on NAS.

I tried pressing on a folder (classical) and the various play icons appear. However, nothing plays after selecting one. I found out that if there is another dir in the directory then no files play. However, if you go to a folder that only has music files in it, press on the icon, choose a play option, then all those files are added to a playlist. While not as nice as just selecting the top level dir and select play all, it is better than having to select every file individually.
just curious what, if any, library management tool you used? All my music has been loaded/managed via
iTunes though I use other means for playback. I'm wondering, If I take my library from itunes, put it on a USB HDD and then want to playback through the S1, what I'm going to encounter. thx,

I originally started with the Bryston BDP-1, and they only supported a direct attached USB at the time. Prior to that I was using an iPod with a Wadia 171 iTransport, so I was ripping all my CDs with iTunes. After I got the Bryston, I took a USB drive and created folders (Classical, Rock, Jazz, etc), and then went through my iTunes Music directory on the PC, and copied the sub-folders into the appropriate USB folder. I have used this ever since, so I guess it is my music management software. Also, very few albums have art work. As I download albums from HD Tracks, and put them into the appropriate USB folder, then artwork appears, but none with the iTune ripped CDs. This doesn't bother me as I just consider the artwork as something nice, but not necessary.
Thanks, very helpful. Your experience suggests to me there's a bit of work upfront to create the new category files, but it's doable. Alternatively..... if you used iTunes then presumably most of the subfolders were : "Artist/Album/Track".
Would that be correct?
So if i didn't care about types of music, i could just operate with Chicago Symphony next to Chick Corea. Yes?
Mainly, I'm just wanting to be sure the functionality of the S1 will work the USB.

Yes, iTunes stores music as Artist/Album/Track. You could put everything in one folder, but I find it easier to deal with by using genres. There is no issue with using a USB drive with the Lumin. I am listening to mine now while it plays a classical playlist in random order.

Reading through this thread I don't think I see the answer to your question. I am not sure but I think the answer is very simple. Did you push the button you see in this iPad mini screenshot? It show the artists only with one of the album covers and the number of albums you have from the artist. Of course your tagging defines how it appears. As an examples here you can see that my Bill Evans collection is divided. I could choose to tag all with 'Bill Evans' and it will show only one Bill Evans entry with 16 albums.
I think this works great. I use the great Lumin app with Minim Server (thank you Simon for the good work) and my Linn DS player. To me this works flawlessly. Only for the native Tidal support I use Kazoo.

Which one is better is very system dependent.
Some people like the Ken Lau PSU, others say it didn't make much difference.
I'm pretty sure Lumin has used the same power supply for the S1 and A1 since they were introduced.
The only type of user manual is info available on Lumin's website.

I listened to Mark's (MDP) A1 last year. He had at the time the Raidho D3s and Classe electronics - maybe he also had the Hegel amp at the time (can't remember). It sounded fantastic and I really like the user interface of the Lumin. I went with the S1 based on recommendations from Mike, Jock, Bill, and Mark. I typically would never buy a component like this without hearing it first. However, these gentlemen are trustworthy and, clearly, I have not been disappointed. I absolutely like the S1.

Skolis - What speakers do you have? I will also tell you something interesting that I have observed. I find some of my younger clients who grew up on CD's and MP3's prefer the S1 because of its clean balanced sound with tight bass. In contrast, I have found some of the folks who are a little older and grew up on vinyl and R2R tend to love the sound of the A1. The A1 is more warm and analog sounding.
Let me know what speakers you have and perhaps I can make a suggestion. I have both the A1 and S1 and both are excellent in their own right. If you have a lot of bass in your system, I would recommend the S1. The A1 has a little looser bass, more analog.
