Lumin Questions...

I have some questions about the operation of the Lumin - basically the app itself that I'm hoping some kind folks here can help me sort out.

1. When browsing by Artist it seems that it's really an album view sorted by Artist name. In other words, it shows every album instead of a list of artists. So if I have 1000 Grateful Dead albums, scrolling through the G's is going to take a very long time. I notice if I change the view to 'list' it will show each artist only once, but if I tap on an artist I go to album view again and see albums that aren't restricted to the artist I'm trying to browse. Is there any way to see ONLY a list of albums that belong to an artist (without typing in the artist name in the filter)?

2. When you add more music to your collection, what's the procedure for getting the Lumin app to see them?

3. Can you list more than one location for music files? For example, I have a zillion DSD files that I've yet to play through the Lumin because they reside in a different location than my PCM files.

I'm sure I'll have more, but I'll start with these.

Thanks in advance!

Also, what's the best way to handle multi-disc albums?

I'm used to JRemote (JRiver) where as long as the discnumber field is populated, it lists the discs in order under one album name. I'm noticing some weird stuff happening where the track numbers are all messed up, so any insight there would be much appreciated!

Ian, I will try to make some videos on the Lumin app and post up on YouTube.

A lot of the issues you're having surround the original rip and meta data. For albums, I see just one album per artist.

For #2, you need to stop and restart minimserver. Wait a few minutes for it to reset and then reload the library. There are faster ways and I think you can even do it through the app now.

3. I believe so, but I haven't tried as I only have one NAS.

Multi-disc albums show up as disc 1 and disc 2 for me. For example, James Taylor Live shows up as disc 1 and disc 2.

Again, it's all back to the original rip and meta data. I use the default settings of DBPOWERAMP and it works like a champ.

Let me add a question I asked earlier. While I can clear a playlist using the trash icon, I cannot figure out how to delete a playlist. There must be some way to remove these playlists.

Bud, I wish I could help, but I'm new at this myself. The difference is that I'm using Minimserver on a Synology NAS with the Lumin App acting as the control point. I really don't know how it works with a USB drive. You might try the Linn app which is Kinsky. Kinsky may just do what you are wanting.

As I understand it, Kinsky will not control the Lumin hardware options, but it will see the Lumin and control your library. It's screen looks more like a computer file structure.

BUT, If the Lumin is not on a network, it might not see it...

Bud, yes, easy, just swipe your finger from right to left on the line of the name of the playlist. Delete will then appear beside the name and you push it. Two seconds. If you are still stuck, let me know and I will send you a video.

Here's a screengrab to show how I am experiencing the 'browse by artist'

Mike: I don't think my meta-data is the issue. I'm very familiar with meta-data and have been dealing with it for years. I also use dbPowerAmp.

So, does anyone else see this sort of thing when browsing by artist?

1. Press and HOLD an album. Then click on the artist name. The Lumin app will automatically put the artist name to the filter for you without the need to type.

3.
a. For more than one NAS (or more than one UPnP server), you'll need to select one in the Lumin app. Browsing of albums is restricted to your selected server (library).
b. If the question is how to make a UPnP server supports multiple folders, then it depends on the configuration of the UPnP server.
c. When browsing a USB drive directly attached to Lumin, all the folders should be present. Just traverse the folder structure.

Re: #1 You are seeing the same behavior as me?

Holding on an album to filter that artist is a great tip but doesn't really solve my issue (which is I want to be able to browse by artist easily; if I have only 100 artist, but 10,000 albums, browsing 100 entries is much easier than 10,000).

This for BlueFox, from a new member: I like your set up
Pass XP-20 pre, X600.5 amps
Sony XA5400ES SACD
Lumin S1
Magico S5 speakers
Now, sorry for the "dumb" question, what are you using for a source for the Lumin?
Do you have a NAS?
thx.

Since I switched from a Bryston BDP-1 to the S1, I am using a direct attached USB drive. That is how the BDP-1 was originally designed, although with the latest firmware one can use a NAS.

I'm not sure I understand your needs correctly, but anyway, since Lumin is compliant with UPnP AV / OpenHome standards, you may try out other control point software for browsing and playback control. You still need the Lumin app to configure the hardware and resampling (if/when necessary).

Ian, are you files saved as Artist/Album/Song or Album/Artist/Song?

This is the correct behavior of the current LUMIN app. The Artist tab is actually a list of all album, sorted by artist. To look for a subset of Artist, you can use the "header view" to show only artist name, or use the filter serach. Once you tap (select) an artist, it will switch back to a list of album, and jump to the selected artist.

Currently, The Album/Artist/Genre etc tabs work only in a single top level browsing, hence it will always list all album. This behavior will be further improved later with multi-level and selective filtering browsing in the future.

Currently, if you must see only album(s) from a single artist, using MinimServer, you can go to the "Folder" tab, select Artist->one of the artist->Album to view only the set of album.

About updating LUMIN app library content with MinimServer, please follow these steps:
- change your library content by add/delete/modify music file on NAS running MinimServer
- in LUMIN app under Music Library Option, select "MinimServer Rescan"
- LUMIN will say the server is Offline, this may take 10-20mins if you have a really big library
- after MinimServer rescan process finished, LUMIN should automatically detect any library content change and show a rotating circle and does library update in background. Again this process may take 10-20mins if you have a huge library
- after LUMIN rotating circle stopped, the updated library content should show in LUMIN app
- if for some reason, the automatically background update does not show the library change, then you can go to LUMIN app library Option, and manually tap the "Update Library". This will force LUMIN app does a library update and LUMIN app will show a rotating circle.
- while LUMIN app is updating library with the rotating circle, you can still browse and play music normally, just that new change is not yet reflected in LUMIN app yet.

Multi-disc handling depends on MinimServer configuration. Please check Browsing your library

LUMIN app gets music library info from a UPnP/DLNA server. If you have multiple servers, then you need to switch to that server in LUMIN app to browse it's content. On the other hand, depends on your server setup, you can configure a single server to look for content from multiple locations (folders, HDDs etc).

psme,

I have a direct attached USB drive attached to my S1. This is from my previous player, a Bryston BDP-1. The Bryston was controlled by the mPod app.

The USB drive has top level directories labeled by music type; classical, rock, jazz, etc. Each directory type has sub-directories of artists, and artists has sub-directories of various ripped CDs.

The mPod app has the ability to select a directory, either the very top or other sub-directory, and select "play all files in directory". For example, doing this at the 'Classical' top level directory would create a 5000 song playlist.

How do I do this with the Lumin app?

Thank you.

Bud, I sent you another video on sorting by genre. I hope this helps.

Mike,

Thanks. Using your video example of Classical with 285 CDs I want to select the Classical dir, and play (randomly) all files in the 285 CDs. I DO NOT want to have to select every CD, and every song on the CD, to achieve that. I just want to select Classical and play all songs in that directory.

If the app cannot do that then that is a good enhancement for the next version, since it is a basic bit of functionality.
