Lumin P-1 arrives tomorrow

Yup! I buy the Audio Wave Blue Note XRCD24 "Redbook" discs, rip 'em with XLD, and put the ripped digital files on the hard drive for Alita, Battle Angel (my Akasa-cased NUC/Roon Core).

Simple. And, simple is...good. 👍

I no longer have a server, used to own a Naim Core, now I just have a 3 TB external hard drive plugged in the back of the P1. Honestly I mostly listen to internet radio and Qobuz.

Yep, an HD plugged into the back of the P1 will work, too.

Simple solution, and simple solutions work the best. 👌

You may try DSD upsampling for 44.1kHz music, and see whether you like it or dislike it. It works for local NAS / USB drive and Tidal / Qobuz excluding MQA.

Peter do I just enable it and it should work right away, or do I need to power down or something?
I think it says custom, when you click on it there is an option to upscale to various DSD levels…

Well so much for trying upscaling. Came home and turned the P1 on and a window popped up saying an update is available, so I hit yes. It had the spinning wheel for a while, then it kind of froze with just the word Lumin on the screen. Can not get it to do anything now, even powered down with the switch on the back and powered off my switch.
Nothing is happening…HELP!

I just want to say thank you publicly to Peter. He saw my plea for help, sent me a fix right away and I am now back up and running. Where else do you find such outstanding service?

I could not agree more. It's one of the key reasons I bought a Lumin product. It's not just about a product's "functionality and features", it's also about customer service and support, especially for products that can be as complex and have as long a service life as audio products.

And, the responsiveness, support, and expertise from Peter has always been...absolutely outstanding. 👊 👍 👏

Ok I am ready to try upscaling, I made a Qobuz playlist named test songs to upscale.
Went to options and I see these figures, do I change the highlighted ones to something new?
The only one I changed so far is pcm output bit depth…changed it from native to 24 bit.
When I play the first song, in the upper left it says 16 bit (24 bit) in brackets, but on the Lumin P1 screen it still says 16 bit.
Is this right Peter? How do I get it to upscale to DSD 512?

Thank you Peter, will give that a try, what about the last row where I changed to 24 bit?
I can confirm this worked, easy to give a try. In the upper left corner on IPad it now says
44.1 Khz (5.6 Mhz)
16 bit (1bit)
1411.1 Mbps
PCM to DSD

DSD is 1 bit. Please ignore the 24 bit setting. It's not relevant for most people.

Thanks Peter, I have not done enough listening to make an accurate opinion yet on this.
Another question for you… I see on the P1’s product page it lists under digital output:
USB
BNC/SPDIF
HDMI
Now USB seems to allow the highest output numbers, but I do not see an output on the back of the unit. Does it share the same USB input socket, yet you may need to change something in settings?
I am thinking of trying a Weiss Dac 204 between my P1 and Nagra amp so would like to start with the highest value coming out of the P1.
Has anyone tried an external Dac with their P1?

For P1 output to a USB DAC, please use the USB type A port.

Note that you can only output to DAC from network streaming, not from other audio inputs. P1 is not a "digital preamp" (that people need for DSP speakers).

So the port that I just used to rescue my P1 is also an output?
Will I be able to control the volume still using the P1 into an external Dac?
Not sure what you mean when you say it is not a digital preamp.

P1 analog/digital/network input -> P1 analog output and volume control: yes

P1 network input -> P1 USB/BNC output and volume control: yes

P1 analog/digital input -> P1 USB/BNC output: no

To understand "digital preamp" from a DSP speaker perspective, check out Kii Control.
