Lumin or Linn?

Not sure its my fault. Windows sucks. I wasn't on the development team. :)

Mike...thx! I am going to see if Goodwins has one in store for me to demo. I can see this taking the place of my Ref 7 CD player and Ref 3 preamp with its volume control. Plus it has an additional analog input which I can connect my phono pre through. The volume control is done in the analog domain. Could be a nice and clean 2 box for 1 swap while upgrading my digital. Have to make sure that it works well with my phono set-up (i.e., not too much gain and low noise floor). Cool. Thx for the info.

The only bummer I saw in the specs is that it does not do DSD natively (like your MA-1). It does DSD over PCM which is not ideal. Apparently there is a transport that does CD and SACD as well that you can mate with the DACute 4, so in this instance you could play your SACDs via the transport and output DSD (again over PCM) to the DAC I am assuming via the AcuteLink input on the DAC. Thx for the info again!

PS: By the way, any sense on pricing? The DACute 3 I believe was $6,595 in chrome finish and $5,895 in black finish. Is it roughly same or bumped up? Also, not clear from specs if the USB is asynchronous or not.

Check out the new EAR combo

Mike...thx for pic. Come to think of it, the DACute4 and its associated transport was shown at one of the recent audio shows. I remember commenting on it here or maybe at the other forum a while back. I am going to see if I can dig up the show report on it. Thx

Maybe Joe will chime in here. He bought the EAR CD player and loves it.

I love the looks of both the Lumin and the Linn Majik and Kiko! Nice streamlined look with just a touch of pizazz.

Nothing that blatantly wrong with Win7, and certainly bests any MacOS flavor. I could understand the argument back in the ME/XP/Vista days versus MacOS - but now, no.

Not to mention the hardware available for Win (or hackintosh) builds far exceeds anything Apple can get their hands on.

Oh man, here we go again. Windows is a disaster now. XP was the last good Windows OS.

Computers today aren't about who has the fastest CPU. They are all fast. What it comes down to is usability, reliability and the overall experience.

The explosion of Mac is because people got sick of the geek speak and just wanted to use the computer and have it work every time for what they wanted to do and not have to worry about bugs and viruses.

I do really like Office (for Mac) however. Apple's office equivalent can't touch it.

HELP : no WIRED access to my network from my listening place!

Well, Since I have no WIRED access to my network from my listening place (in other words, my wife will not allow for an Ethernet cable across the living-room :-), I am more interested in the AURENDER (local storage) and the LUMIN (it now can play directly from a USB Drive/stick): With booth Music servers, I don't need ethernet access to a NAS !

But ...
- If the SERVER cannot be connected to my Network, how can I use the Ipad to control the Server and select the files to be played ?
- In the case of the LUMIN, is the playback from USB Drive/stick as good as when streaming the NAS through Ethernet ?

So... what is the solution for me ?

Thanks in advance
Bertrand

Welcome to AS!

I'm assuming you want to use a streamer. Naim's NDX and other streamers can be done by WIFI and works quite well.

Bertrand - you need a wired network connection tied into the same network that your iPad accesses wirelessly.

I would at least ask a low voltage specialist if your room can be wired. I was convinced our family room couldn't be done, but they managed it. The Lumin is worth the effort IMO.

Failing that, Jocks suggestion sounds like a good one. Naim.

Come to think about it - what about an Apple Airport Express? Plug the Lumin into the Express - the Apple Express connects wirelessly to the wireless network (recommend the Apple AirPort Extreme). This might work? Not sure. I would ask the folks at Lumin.

Maybe I've had too many Christmas drinks! But I think this may work....
