Lumin L1

I can believe it. Its a neat package.

The D1 is the entry level half sized unit, no?

I used to have 2 L1s and my Synology NAS all hooked up at the same time and switched back and forth with the app. It's easy and works great. In fact, you can make a playlist on the app with different songs from different L1s/NASs. Very convenient for comparing. I have all of these on a separate circuit from my audio gear. I now have gotten rid of the Synology and only use it for Movie storage.

I also have a beefed up power supply for one of my L1s from Kenneth Lau and I do believe that there is a improvement with it. The improvement is significant if you have the L1 plugged into the same circuit as the audio.

Yes, it is entry level, but D1 still uses dual Wolfson WM8741 like A1 and T1, and retains both the balanced and unbalanced outputs as well as the digital output. Different from A1/T1, D1 is a single board design, thus physically smaller, drops the high-cost Lundahl output transformers and drops the HDMI output. It comes with an entry level external 12V power supply (that can be replaced easily by off-the-shelf units).

If the D1 becomes available in the US, I will order one tomorrow for my second system.

Even though the demand is more than the supply right now, I'm sure it'll be available once the supply is ramped up.

Perfect !

I'm a Lumin whore. It's such a great analog sound. The best digital I've ever heard since adding the L1.

Mike,

Can a 1 or 2 TB USB drive be plugged into the Lumin? If so, have you tried it? How does it sound - is there a compromise in sound by doing this?

Thx!

Yes. Sounds good! Indexing might not be as good as you like it in the app, but it's been a while since I tested it to remember. But it's fine so long as you have artist/album/song indexing.

So is a thumb drive.

There is little input in this thread on the SQ impact of the L1. Anyone? Upside from a regular NAS besides ease of use?

I'm not sure I understand how it works: can you add music on the L1 through the LAN or do you have to plug it to your PC via USB?

You hook the L1 to your computer via USB to copy files to it. You then unhook the USB and hook it to the network via ethernet.

I wish you could copy songs thru the network, it would save some hassle. Its very easy, but still a hassle to physically hook up cables.

I definitely heard a difference in sound, for the better. I can't understand why, but it was better. i kept going back and forth from NAS to L1, after 3 days I was very sure of what I heard.

What about L1 vs. USB flash memory if you have tried?

Mark, you're not alone. On Li from Lumin and the distributor both told me the same thing. The consensus was that the PSU in the L1 helped things sonically.

I don't know why either, but there is no doubt in my experience that different kinds of NAS give very different results with streamers, be it the Lumin or a Naim or even a small Marantz. The best results I got with streamers was always using my Antipodes as a NAS (and I can add music through ethernet, even rip CDs :P ) but that is kinda painful money wise (all the more since so far I like results from the Antipodes directly than what goes through the streamer).

Clearly the power supply on the NAS makes a difference ; also the NAS tends to pollute power all around the house, so it's nice to have a power filter ; and SSD is better than HDD ; and different routers, different ethernet cables yield different results ; a specialist I visited recently swears that attenuators on ethernet cables make a huge difference.

Recently I helped a journalist reviewing streamers at different price points. USB usually was less good than streaming from the Antipodes, but not always - with the little Marantz for example there was no clear winner.
