Lumin Firmware 14

Non-Connect Spotify is not authorized and is technically impossible now. Lumin playlist (once setup) is in the player hardware, retrieved and played completely by itself. You can have the smartphone or iPad powered off without affecting the playlist playback from internet or local NAS.

In case anyone hears a SQ difference after upgrading from 13.x to 14.0, please report and state the model.

Firmware 14 actually also has the following important changes not listed in the web release notes, applicable to all models:

- Improve network bandwidth usage for gapless playback

- Improve processing efficiency

These could impact SQ, however small the difference is.

I counted 15 positive SQ feedback, 2 negative SQ feedback from three forum and a Facebook group.

I am actually surprised that there aren't more people reporting back....for me and my ears in my setup the difference was not small. And i really like it , thank you so much Lumin and Peter-.

In fw14.1 the Lumin app (iPhone) seems to think Minimserver is offline while it is not. So I now play via disk station share. Double tapping Lumin app, swiping it away to close it and reopening the app does not resolve. Anyone else have this?

Any thoughts also on how to add also SUBfolders when pressing and holding a folder for playback?
e.g. Audioshare\Folder1\100 subfolders with each 20 audiofiles. If you currently press+hold Folder1 you would still end up with an empty playlist. :doubtful:

This is not supported. See if other OpenHome or UPnP control apps do, or even JRiver or Audirvana.

We use a tag model, so usually you tap and hold the album art to add an album to the playlist.

I see. I do browsing by folder and now add one by one -also to be Abe to hierarchically go above the tag system-. I know of the past that e.g. sonos could do this since forever. I just love navigating. Could it be made possible for a future fw ?

edit1: I’m thinking that the Lumin app currently already does an index of the integral folder structure. i can imagine if subfolders would be seen as part of their parent folder then it would work out.
edit2: meanwhile I keep enjoying the current capabilities.

After a few semi-casual sessions with music that I am very familiar with, I hear an improvement in the overall sound. To me, there seems to be less background noise, which makes instruments and vocals sound cleaner and more separated.

Tracks played at the usual volume levels don’t sound as loud as before (not sure if this is due to the perceived darker background or if something else accounts for this).

Bass seems a bit tighter, and I notice a very distinct improvement in the sound of cymbals.

More critical listening ahead, including playing some “problem tracks” and also comparing the sound of the T2 with firmware 14.1 to CD’s played on the Wadia, but so far I REALLY like what I hear.

Summing it up, this is yet another substantial FREE performance upgrade from Lumin. Bravo!

Update: the Qobuz lists load much faster now. The speed before firmware 14.1 was a mildly annoying issue compared to TIDAL in the LUMIN app.

Another nice surprise: One local station (WJR) that would previously never finish loading and begin streaming just now started streaming within a few seconds of clicking on it.

So far, firmware 14.1 has delivered several noticeable improvements with zero downside. (Disclosure: I didn’t have 14.0 up for long enough to see if any of the improvements over v13.4 were there before moving on to 14.1 a few days later.)

I can say this: The Bill Evan’s Trio’s “Sunday at the Village Vanguard” (Qobuz - Redbook upsampled to DSD 128) sounds like something that could have been recorded and mastered last weekend with the latest technology, NOT a show from over 60 years ago!

This is the significant improvement mentioned in post #29. It fixes some radio stations that took a long time to load or just would not load in the past.

Significant improvements are made in Firmware 14.1

can it be that SQ wise the 14,1 FW is lacking some depth in bass? It tends to sound somewhat lighter to my ears.

PS can it also be due to the fact that I switched to a new streamer per replacement that is still in its break-in period? (it has around 80 hrs run time incl standby of which round 60 hrs playtime)

Please turn off unneeded services (e.g. Roon Ready, Spotify Connect, Lumin Streaming for AirPlay, Tidal Connect. etc.), and let it play 7x24 with the DAC on but amp turned off.

You may also experiment different outputs, especially USB vs AES (with USB disconnected), to see which sounds better.

Just for listing/info:
I had already unneeded services and outputs turned off. (Tidal off, Qobuz off, Spotify Connect off, Roon Ready off, USB disconnected, AES off and BNC coax off)
I notice a very small difference in SQ between volume control off vs on. Leedh processing always on. Both on and off SQ is Ok though.
I seem to notice small difference in MQA settings Off vs Digital Out vs Passthrough option. The Digital Out and Passthrough option seem to sound better. I played 16bit 44kHz WAV.

Now looping a playlist for the next 7x24. I've always been curious about break-in time.

Hi Peter,

I'm pleased to confirm, that the firmware 14 updates solved my problems with the radio service(Tunein).
The last correct firmware for my Lumin A1 was 11.7. Till now with each new firmware release, I was forced to do fallback to the old one just to have radio service back.

Thanks a lot
Darius

I didn't even know there was new firmware until I saw this thread. In my settings I had the option to check for new firmware updates enabled, but I never got any notifications. I checked my current version and it was 13.0 so it seems I missed out on a few updates along the way. The only way I could get it to update was to toggle off/on the option to check for updates. It worked this time, I hope it continues to work in future.
