Hi, I'm considering buying a pair of 3.7s. I've seems recommendations for PS Audio, Pass Labs, Bryston, etc. I was considering a combination of high headroom/low gain. High headroom to ensure effortless driving and zero clipping, and low gain so the preamp wouldn't be crazy attenuating the signal from most sources. I was leaning towards Buckeye or Apollon Purifi for amplifiers. Any opinions on if that is wise, and if so, what I could match for preamp?

There are probably others Audio by VanAlstine preamps have selectable gain control for output. Don't let the reasonable price fool you they are good performers in my experience.

I've seen several Parasound power amps that have variable gain controls for output.

Maybe go with same brand pre and power for synergy and optimum gain between the two.

Congrats from a fellow Maggie owner. I would look at the Parasound JC5 or JC1 monos if they are in your budget. A Pass X250.8 would pair well. Do not buy a bright amp, they do not go well with Maggies (1.6's).

I first used a Parasound A21 amp and then moved on to a Pass X250 amp which was wonderful. I paired it with a BAT tube preamp. I loved that system. I am getting ready to retire so I down sized my system.

Also consider dual subs.

The AVA DVA 750 amp would also be a great pairing with the 3.7's. I have a relationship with Van Alstine and do reviews of their gear on the Audiocircles forum. I know the 3.7's well as a friend of mine owns a pair. I love them. Should have bought the 3.6's when I bought my 1.6's.

I ended up going with the magtech and matching preamp

I'm not familiar with Magtech hope you come back and give us a report how it sounds.

One of the best systems I heard with Maggies was the 3/7's driven by a Pass 350.8. I don't remember the rest of the system.
I saw a handful of posts here recommend them, apparently they were designed specifically for magnetic planars. They also met my criteria for low(ish) gain and lots of headroom, and the price isn't bad compared to similarly spec'd amps.
