Lossless Streaming? Say hello to Tidal

For you guys who do streaming, are you using this as background noise, er, I mean background music or are you sitting down in your listening chair with your favorite beverage seriously listening to streaming music?

Both. I love exploring new artists and albums I've never heard of and now can hear them in at least Redbook quality. $240/year is 12 CD's.

Serious? Because of the quality. Users who don't want steak, can stick with hamburger. Tidal is a HiFi company (speakers, amps) - they made a tremendous effort in delivering what many of us audiophiles have wanted. Hi Res streaming.

If its just for audiophiles, then it won't exist for long is my point. Tidal isn't doing this for our tiny market- costs too much.

btw, Spotify hasn't turned a profit since inception and has like 10 million paid subscribers and still can't breakeven. this is a tough, tough business. i wish Tidal good luck.

Amazon didn't turn a profit for years and all the naysayers said it wouldn't fly. Now Amazon is dictating to USPS to deliver packages on Sunday.

Once people realize there is better than MP3's, Tidal or similar will take off.

I remember discussing MOG and Spotify with people a year ago and they looked at me sideways. Now the guys in my hockey locker room were all talking about Spotify last night. These are guys who love to have Spotify streaming all day while they are at work. I told them about Tidal and they were interested. Whether they pony up another $10/month remains to be seen....but I believe, as with TV's, once people experience higher definition, they won't go back.

I hope Lumin can add apps like Tidal (or even Spotify, Pandora for that matter) in the not too distant future. I've always heard a degrading of sound via airplay (streaming redbook from my iPad v. something played from NAS). I think we debated whether the data was streaming or if was decoded by the DAC in the i-device a few times. I don't recall if we reached a conclusive answer. Anyways, the service looks interesting.

I've sent a note to Li to see if they can build it right into the Lumin app. But Mike, try the streaming from the iPad Tidal app to the Lumin. Sounds great.

Good news, Joe! I'm awaiting notification from Aurender regarding updates of their server and iPad software to take full advantage. I had the privilege of experiencing WiMP (same thing as Tidal) on an X100L in their private room at RMAF. Remarkable.

They have put the upgrades on the servers here, and I'm awaiting info on the iPad app. The final release versions are planned for later this year.

Their iPad app easily toggles between music stored locally and that from Tidal, so your playlists can include both. You can search on any field, including composer and conductor, which are important to classical music listeners. With Tidal streaming selected there are tabs to view recommendations, genres, moods, and new and recommended playlists.

I should have this to demo at least on the X100L at next Saturday's open house.

I tried this service today but it doesn't see my DAC. Only sees the on-board hi-def audio junk. Anyone have any suggestions? JRiver sees my USB DAC just fine...

In fact, I saw them point this out in one of their press releases when they announced the service at RMAF I believe. Not that this makes any difference but just thought I would point it out.
