LampizatOR DSD Only DAC Generation 5

Yeah, I went crazy with Tube with like 12 rectifiers and 9 pairs of output tubes….all old tubes including a weak set of 101s (vintage Western Electric) bought for a song and 1955-7 Phillips MW metal base GZ34 rectis. I have no 300b though...

Forgot to add - I have the Big 7 on order as well.

Holy smokes. Congrats!

:congrats:

Adam,

How does it compare to your main DAC - the Trinity?

Does it sound tubey in any way?

I'm looking for an organic sounding DAC myself I hate the downsides of tubes (soft transients, woolly bass, etc).

Madfloyd, he has a DSD only Lampi and the Trinity is PCM only.

I think he is running the Lampi with HQ Player upsampling with Caps using AO Win2012 in core or GUI mode. Totally TURBO Jet speed approach!
The fact that he is getting a Big7 DSD only seems to indicate he likes that elixir.

I am assuming his Big7 will have DSD256????

Thanks, Wisnon, makes sense that he would supplement his Trinity with the Lampi.

I would still like this thoughts on how the Lampi sounds (obviously it sounds GOOD, but there are different flavors of good....)

I'm admittedly biased since i'm the N.A. co-distro. Listening to a L4 now ( waiting on my new 7 ) and I don't miss my 7. Sure when you compare them, the 7 has a beauty and delicay the 4 and 5 cannot match. Musicality wise, the entire Lampi line is exemplary. It's a right side brain experience for sure. Also have to admit my Psvane 845 WEs arrived tonight from Grant. Oh boy are they good!

I'm still waiting for my Lampi demo. [emoji22]

Love to make that happen Mike, but none on the shelf to demo and a few weeks build wait make it tough.

To help out , we will be debuting the Golden Gate in the Higgins room in the lobby of the Westin at Axpona. Also have a BIG 7 in room 504. So although you still won't know how it sounds in your rig, hearing it in two others, should give you an idea. The designer Lukasz Fikus will be there as well.

I will be at Axpona as well. Looking forward to it!

Lampi is more of a Koetsu, and Trinity is more of a Lyra - if you know what I mean.

Trinity has the best bass I have heard from any dac - the texture and articulation is absolutely amazing. Lampi, beeing tube design, has a disadvantage here. Same for transients, details, soundstaging etc.

Lampi on the other hand brings that glorous, seductive midrange with vocals that seem to materialize in your listening room.

Both DACs are great, Trinity is definately more transparent of the two and closer to the source. But the Lampi is oh so beautiful ...

Got it, thanks. :)

For those of you who have bought Lampis, any advice on absolute must have options for my Gen 5 DSD only dac? They are putting in Jupiter caps (better than Duelund in dsd only Dac?) and sounds like 6x5 rectifier and ec88 tube output stage (vs 6sn7 etc)? I asked that they build me the best sounding version possible - I didn't ask for double dsd...if the DAC rises to level of one of my tables I will send it in for upgrades after that. But looking for any advice here before they build my dac. Thanks in advance. Darrin

Interesting comparison as I both use the Koetsu coral stone platinum diamond and several Lyra cartridges, including the Lyra Olympos. The latter is the most 'romantic' sounding Lyra and one heck of a (beautiful sounding) cartridge. I still love my Trinity combo: when you combine the dac with the Trinity pc&drive, set it up carefully on a good wooden rack resting on Halcyonics active devices and connect it through the Tripoint Thor se grounding cables to the Tripoint emperor, the Trinity combo can shine beautifully in the midrange as well. Maybe Wisnon can comment as he heard this combination of audio devices. I need to do more listening with a better computer(connection) in order to find out whether the midrange of the GG dac shines more than that of the Trinity. I would conclude that my Trinity combo sound like a Lyra Olympos: very detailed and very transparant but at the same time beautiful sounding.

I went for dual chokes in the PSU, dual mains transformers, dual DSD module and Jupiters.

Before that I tried a standard Lampi DSD at home, with standard caps, and the improvements all the upgrades brought were very substantial. Not sure what was the contribution of each of those upgrades though. They were relatively cheap, so I though - why not.

All in all, such a loaded DSD lvl 5 is not too far from the Big 7 sound wise, in much more managable case.

Yes Adam, but you run a fully balanced system. Would the dual mono DSD bring such and improvement to a SE system setup?

Darrin, EC88 is good and has good bass, but me I like the ECC40 tube. Another paid option to look into is a fancy digital input capacitor. However, as you said you may go back in for upgrades later, by then DSD256 on PCB will be ready and you could consider that then.

Hi Rob, Nice seeing you around these parts.

:lurk: Very exciting thread. Their website is a little confusing. I would certainly be interested in the G5, fully balanced D.DSD only DAC? Where I am confused is whether this is indeed different to the optioned L5?

Same thing. It all Big 5 and you can add and take away features and that changes the price.

DSD only is cheaper than the basic DSD+PCM config. You can then add balanced, upgraded caps, volume control/Remote and get the dual mono DSD module. I think there is a dealership network in Oz.
