KR242 tubes

Ok, gents. I'm hearing oblique references to these KR242 tubes. I'm assuming these are signal tubes and not rectifiers? Not much info online about them, and I'm not very knowledgeable about tubes overall. 242 is a new number for me.

How are you all using these?

And can you describe the sound relative to other well-known tubes? What kind of sound character are we talking about here? I'm currently running Takatsuki 300B's and a 1946 RCA JAN double-getter 5R4GY rectifier in my Big7. Any thoughts on how the KR242's would change my sound?

The Kr242 is a DHT not a recti so you would use them instead of the Tak 300b's.

The Kr242s are cut from the same cloth as a 101d - very dynamic indeed with big soundstage and very fast sounding. Lots of resolution like a 101d too. The bass is more potent than a 101d and the top end just a fraction more refined. They'll sound very different from a 300b although I don't know the Tak 300b well - assuming the Tak 300b sounds like a very fine stereotypical 300b, then you'll be trading a touch of mid range magic, a fraction less bloom and tangibility, and a fraction less front to back layering. You'll gain more dynamics, speed, resolution and better bass. Therefore it is all based on system balance and what way you want to move towards unless of course you are like a lot of us and keep them both and enjoy best of both worlds :celebrate008_2:

Unfortunately, I don't have a ton of experience with 300B's, or DHT's in general, to compare the Tak sound signature. However, from what others have described in some of the online posts I've read is that the Taks are highly refined and detailed 300B's, but on the leaner and quicker side of the equation as far as 300B's go.

I know that I definitely did NOT like the standard Psvane 101D's that came stock with my Big7. But it could just be because those are relatively inferior tubes. And maybe with a nice Brimar or warm rectifier I wouldn't have disliked them quite so much, or at least that would get me closer to my sweet spot if I went with some KR242's.

So, what rectifiers are people using with the 242's?

The KR 242 are steroidal. You have a great 300b set. If you get a pair of 242s you will have two very different but great sounding valves. You can try various 274b rectis - I use a KR 242b which is very good. I haven't heard the WE 274b or the Tak 274b. Putting the 242 in B7 is close to GG. Dynamics, bass, presence

Reviving this thread - I've moved to a new home that is a lot more laid back, acoustically. I think I'm ready to try something fine with more detail, dynamics, emphasis on transients/attack. The current system sound is too laid back. So, it might be time to try the KR242. Where is the best place to purchase them? I'm not seeing them on the list of available KR tubes on the websites I've found.

Ask Mike, Call Kron directly, contact Mike Lavigne (he has a pair) or call Lukasz.
