Well, I went ahead and tried setting up my Denon DP47f with my Shure M97xE cart. Took me 45 minutes and lots of guessing.
I could not varify the tracking force due to the design of the Denon, there's no way to do it because it doesn't register on my scale at all. The adjustment knob covers Tracking force, Anti-skate and Q-dampening, whatever that is. All in one knob!
Alignment with the Shure cart is impossible because one can not see the needle at all, with any tool because of the stupid brush, even in the up position. Also, my eyes are much worse than I thought, so I am going to the eye doctor again earlier than normal. I may be in deep trouble.
anyway, I had to finally just cross my fingers and hope.
So I put on a record and hit the button. I'm using a TCC TC750LC preamp because it's all I have.
Anyway, I put on the record (just hoping that I'm not ruining it) and hit play.
It seems to be fine with no distortion or anything, actually no anomalies at all. So I guess it's ok. However, the sound of the Shure is worse than I thought it would be. It wasn't that great on my Pioneer PL530 (high mass tonearm), but it is atrocious on my Denon (low mass arm)!!!
Almost no highs at all! Severe roll off! Too warm, no detail!
So, I was going to just get an AT95E, but I may just go for an AT440MLA straight away. I don't know, I'll see.
I think I need a better preamp to get something like an Ortofon 2m Bronze or even a Blue to work. I don't know.
All I know is that the Shure is an awful cart! Better than my $400 Sumiko piece of crap, but not really listenable.
I just hope I'm not ruining my records. Of course, I won't be playing any more until I get a better cart.
