Just for fun : Your biggest waste of money in audio ?

Nuforce Dac 9. Sounded great when I first heard it in my system, but later realized it was too detailed and analytical, so sold it. I lasted a couple months with it.

Sony XA5400ES. This was also too analytical and bright for my taste.

Modwright Transporter. Couldn't wait to get rid of it. Perfect example of "smoothness" obscuring the fine details of the music.

Interesting thread!

Although I confess to having some difficulty with the notion of fun & wasting money... [emoji848]

I agree LOL. However I don't feel bad about my experience . it's all live and learn thing.

Also, i used the word of Fun coz I don't want any body to jump up and say " I don't agree about your comment" stuff. If you know what I mean [emoji6]

Lyngdorf RP-1.
Loved it during two years.
Finally realized that it sucked out the real life in my music system and made my pleasure of listening disappear.

The plethora of absorption devices that make nominal difference (e.g. Stillpoints, pucks, cerapucs) when a good solid stand or rack is the main deal. And a atmasphere modded vintage empire table. New turntables from best mfgrs mop the floor with vintage tables.

I would disagree. There is a well know Thorens 124 modder named Schopper in EU, his 124s are phenomenal. I know a guy who sold off his top level SME and Brinkmann for that. There are older expensive vintage like Thorens Reference which will easily beat any modern table including Techdas (which I like). If you go visit DDK's place, you will get to hear both side by side). There have been 3 of us in his room at separate instances and preferred the vintage TTs, and one was a Techdas owner. You will also find reports of many having sold off their Verdier Platine, Acustic Raven, etc for PTP Lenco. I have never heard the Micro Seiki 5000/8000 myself but know 4 people who prefer it to Techdas, including one owner. All I am saying is that it's not that straightforward.

Regarding supports, I did not like Stillpoints and cerapucs at all and prefer to use normal wooden stands with Shun Mook diamond resonators as footers. This seems to work better than SRA, Finite Elemente, Symposium and some other costly stands.

I appreciate the pushback especially specific examples.

-The shortest lived products ever in my system was some Richard Grey units.
-C-J Premier 140, where were the highs?
-Stillpoint under my X2's. Sounded great when I added them. Sounded even better when I removed them. Fortunately lost nothing on the deal.
-Over the years (~20) three versions of Linn LP 12. None of them could ever beat my limited edition Sony 8750 ES.

ARC DAC-8 - sounded ok but at this point can't even give it away...I guess that's life with digital with the rapid development taking place in this space.

Yeah, Mine is ARC DAC 7 -- while I love ARC for analog, I don't find their digital products to my liking

Just sold my PH6 - very nice and by no means a mistake - but too perfect. Went for some Italian temperament instead :).

I purchased a Sony digital audio tape player new quite a few years ago, the Sony DAT60 ES. It is a remarkable sounding tape machine when it worked. Unfortunately it only worked for a year before it began to misbehave, digital stuttering and drop outs. I had it serviced once and that brought it back to life for about six months before it returned to dropping out. I still have the DAT60 ES but haven't used it in years. I still have about 16 DAT 120 blank taps, too. As I see it now, the DAT tape machine was a waste of money and so was the repair.
