Which is so clever I figure it must be well known, but it's new to me. "Audiophiles don't use their equipment to listen to music they use music to listen to their equipment." The statement is credited to Alan Parsons. Well, I thought about it a bit and speaking solely for myself I'd have to say it's partly true, but not entirely. I'd say the music is still the primary motivator, but the gear is a secondary interest. My other hobby is photography, where I realized the same holds true. The pictures are the prime motivation, but I do love the camera gear as well.

Any of you the same way I'm curious, and if so to what degree?

Yes. For me, while enjoying the music is the goal, I get enjoyment out of the searching for and choosing the gear. Additionally, I get equal enjoyment out of room setup. Learning from the experts and experimenting on my room.

So for me, it’s all of that.

For me, it's all about the music. The gear is there to let me get sucked into the music more and be immersed into the performance, instead of just listening to a reproductive effort.
