Within the bass playing community, there is a subset that is known as “doublers” who play both acoustic and electric bass. Within that subset, there is a smaller group of players who are equally proficient on both instruments. And digging deeper, you will find those relative few who are virtuosos on both. This is where John Patitucci resides.

Starting out on electric bass at age 10, John began performing and composing at age 12. At 15, he added the acoustic bass to his stable and began playing piano at 16. Having a great ear and appreciation for many genres of music, he rapidly branched out from playing soul and rock to blues, jazz and classical. Patitucci would eventually earn both a Bachelors and Masters Degree while attending San Jose State University and Long Beach State University and go on to play with a who’s who of artists encompassing a myriad of styles.

My first introduction to John’s stunning musicianship was while he was a member of legendary keyboardist and composer Chick Corea’s Elektric Band in 1986. Not since Stanley Clarke had I witness someone with ridiculous prowess on both the electric and acoustic bass! John set himself apart from his contemporaries by exploring the extended range of bassist Anthony Jackson’s brain child, the six string bass, whom Mr. Jackson recognizes as one of the few bassists who understand the essence of his creation.

I’ve run on with my mouth-or should I say my keyboard-long enough-it’s Patitucci time!

(This song and John’s performance floors me every time! Non-virtuosos need not apply!)

(On a tune that strikes fear in the hearts of most improvisers, no problems here.)

(Greatness permeates the air…..)

(Impeccable groove and timing)

(It must feel good to be great!)

(More of Mr. Patitucci’s versatility on display!)

(Is there anything that this guy can’t play??????)

The evidence is overwhelming-John Patitucci is, indeed, a virtuoso doubler. I rest my case!
