Jay's Audio Journey

The thing is that these so called "giant killers" don't enter the ring to duke it out with the big boys. It's all a big imaginary scenario.
These "giant killers" remind me of Chihuahuas...they bark and bark at the big dogs but they don't ever bite...and if they try to, they squeal like a pig and run under the bed...

""but they don't ever bite."", well not to sure about that comment. As my aunts Chihuahua, that little bastard bite right through my fingernail on my thumb when I tried to give my aunt a hug while she was holding the little tiny lovable bastard. LOL

Well, I preferred the Ampzilla 2000 ($5500/pair new for a long time) to the following on my YG Haileys:

Luxman m900
Nagra Classic
Pass X350.8
BHK 300s
Rowland 625s2

I also prefer the Dart 108 ($12k used) to all those Constellations, Dagostinos, etc. but it won't drive YG. And on really efficient speakers, FirstWatt SITs sound better than any of the monoliths. Apparently Bakoon is the same way. Amplifier circuits are more important than cost imo.

I like it. Let's go, objectivists. Send Jay a pair of your Benchmark AHB2's. Since they measure so well, I'm sure they'll crush boulder and gryphon and whatever else he's got

And don’t forget the no name chi-fi DAC’s!

Why is it so hard to believe something that doesn’t cost six figures can not achieve top tier sound quality. Trust me I am not advocating for the chi-fi products as I know better from experience. But when you see a piece of equipment with 80% of its cost in the machining and fabricating of just the casework why can’t someone forego the eye candy and build an amazing sounding piece of hifi gear?

Because it hasn't been done and everyone is still waiting for it.
That said, i publicly opened up my doors to affordable gear. Let's see if anyone will send me their products...
I'm giving this challenge 30 days and doors are closed. Don't want to hear anymore "scenarios" of the affordable brands after this period is done. You all have the chance NOW to shut me up with these giant killers. WHY NOT DO IT?

Believing only 6 figure gears can produce top sound is as much of a problem as believing in the above statement. While I don’t deny such gear exists, it can’t be further from the truth with Boulder, Gryphon, Magico of the worlds. The sustained success cannot be manufactured with casework.

Who has been bragging?
The thing is that the "giant killer" owners are the ones who go around all forums spreading this virus. Did you know that most owners who have ultra high end systems are actually the quietest on forums? I am vocal because of my channel.

Not saying you were or are bragging and I am not proclaiming any giant killers.

well imho the speaker-amp synergy ranks above the difference between giant and giant-killer.
therefore the constellation creats the killer. find the right amp for the speaker and you are in heaven.

as for our most discussed speakers, b&w, focal, yg, wilson, etc, no, there are no giant killers.
they play exactly as they are driven.

one of my own rules is that the amp has to somehow surpass the speaker for great sound.
otherwise it goes direction of small and hidden.

Define Giant killer ..??

Jay would have to say what “his” definition is , to select amps for compares..

My definition would be moderately priced amps beating or matching high dollar deals , but what is moderately priced , 5K , 10k, 15K .. @ 30K there’s Enough budget to make it as good as any IMO..

Giant killer = a component that is praised to be as ferocious and as big as a pitbull but has the body of a miniature pinscher and the bark of a Chihuahua. They tend to be dogs that "should" protect the house in the same fashion as guard dogs and aren't as "high maintenance" as the larger breeds that eat 40 lbs of food a month. They are highly liked by the masses but for unknown reasons nobody has seen these "giant killers" actually killing the big dogs. This is the mystery that the legend of the Chupacabras didn't even come close to.

I love how in audio we have to resort to analogies and metaphors... Be they racing cars, water hoses and now even Chihuahuas and Pit Bulls...

That's because there is no objective way to compare two amps. So long as they don't shut down or clip driving a load, good luck comparing them. Measurements be damned. Of course the budget amps can't keep up, who would want to admit that a $3k amp may sound very musical and engaging driving an appropriate load next to a $50k amp, right?
