Hey all,

So I've recently opened a few old devices and in them, they had capacitors that had weird brown stuff at the connectors
In the Luxman T1 Tuner:

(maybe it's glue? I have no idea)

and some parts that look broken
In the Philips CD150:

Not unusual to find electrolytics glued to the boards. On the other hand, if it is soft it might be leaking which old caps can do. It will need to be replaced. Electrolytics typically are expected to have a 15 year lifespan. It is well worth the effort to replace old ones if you are keeping the unit.

That is not glue. That is caustic electrolyte leaking from a failed electrolytic capacitor. It will eat through the copper traces and cause all kinds of trouble. It’s time for a complete re-cap and board cleaning.

In the first photo, it looks like old glue to me.
In the second photo, it also looks like old glue, but that's a crystal oscillator, not a capacitor.
In the third photo, I zoomed way in and still don't see anything.

that tuner is worth around a 50-100 USD, my guy could charge multiples of that for parts and labor depending on how many caps needed to be replaced, etc. its more of a question of how bad do you love this thing.

I took another look and it could be glue. But the other pics show a lot of oxidation on all the connections, like this has been in a moist environment for a long time. That may impact its ultimate longevity. I Have had a couple of tuners recapped and aligned and the bill was around $400 for each.
