Is Pono All It's Cracked Up To Be?

My animosity is because N Young said he wanted to bring hi-res or the best he could to the masses. He has now been quoted as saying he hopes someone will take the pono off his hands. I'm betting all my lunch money on the fact that it hasn't made enough coin is the reason....

If you remember, Neil was the major investor in Pacific Microsonics too. Where did that go? Bought by Microsoft? He also owns the studio in Redwood and I'm sure many other things too. So this is far from his first venture into improving the sonics of albums.

Audiophiles will definitely be down for it.. Non-Audiophiles (people who aren't audiophiles) won't be willing to pay that price.
Ive already spent ridiculous amounts of money on audio equipment lol.. but I am an audiophile so..

This would help ease me into buying digital downloads. So far I have abstained mainly because of the integrity of the format and evolving mainstream standardisation.

As for Apple and their customers lifetime rights, Apple owe it to iTunes purchasers to re-deliver the real thing for following that gospel.

Sorry misread your post. But the reaching out to non audiophiles will depend upon marketing. But not with idiots like that Yahoo non-expert who wouldn't know good sound if it ran him over.

Dan....Thanks. Neil Young is right. Someone has to come along with open certification and clean up the digital mess. We've been waiting since the 80s. He obviously likes the origination of DSD with the exception of Sony's closed SACD application. Yes it will play everything and objectively score your file but the question still remains on settling with the best format which historically, trends can change overnight.

I've read both Fremer and Gizmodo articles and have followed this thread since the beginning. Today, I re-read all of this. These are my thoughts.

Mario and Michael both present their respective side to the story of high bitrate digital music.

What is not addressed is, "What makes any (digital or analog) recording sound 'good?'"
  • Michael Fremer does point to Dr. Mark Waldrep of AIX Records as an authority on "High Resolution" digital audio. Moreover, I urge you to read Mark's blog postings, Dr. AIX’s POSTS | Real HD-Audio.
  • Mario addresses, in my words, that most music that has not been produced to the "quality" level (not resolution) that Mark and Michael are referring to (and I think Mario has a point).

I still remain we should be after the version or versions (of a master audio file*) that we enjoy the most. The version may be on LP, recorded at Double DSD or even found on any streaming service. This forum and those like it, I believe, is dedicated to sniffing out those trophy recordings. I can't thank the members here enough for helping me and steering me to the right recordings of my favorite artists. In the days after the record store clerk, we have those of us who are the mavens or connoisseurs to fill that gap.

*Audio mastering - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, :There are masters for LP and CD, and they are different. There are even versions mastered for iTunes https://www.apple.com/itunes/mastered-for-itunes/
