Is de-magnetizing the cartridge too often damaging?

Loop4fun and I have been chatting about a question I have. Is running a de-magnetizer every quarter or so (or at all) damaging to the cartridge (immediately or over time?) It seems I read somewhere that it could be but have nothing definitive on the subject. I have a Sumiko demagnetizer and a Sumiko Blackbird cartridge for reference. Thanks. Larry:S
 
Wow...almost afraid to answer...LOL

If its a MM cart...you will ruin it.

For MC carts, some say every 1000 hours, some say often. There is a paper that says because of the realignment of the magnetism, the more you do, the more you have to, so don't do it...

I would say (opinion) leave it alone...read up VanDe Hul
 
We used this at Bobs (rhapsody NYC) . Listened to a song then demagnetized the cartridge and then listened to the same song. There was an obvious difference. It definitely does work.
About 5 of us were there and all were surprised at how good it worked . I wouldn't even think about it for like a year on a new cart.

That's the one I always refer too also :)

I always suggest contacting the manufacturer. Some such as AJ van den Hul don't like demagging and a friend of mine swears demagging did in his Shelter. I've always demagged my Lyras and a few others without any issue using the old Audio Physics device thar Allen Perkins used to carry. Way better than the old Sumiko Fluxbuster.
 
I may have to sell my TT WEIGHTS outer ring.
On the Verdier table, it seems that it gets magnetized and passes it to the carts. This creates a hum / buzz with a length of about 5 secondes and coming back every 3 seconds, like if someone would blow on it !
I spent weeks thinking about a bad tube in my phono stage !
Never thought about demagnetizing carts until now.

I am with Jeff...funny, one of my test records has a track that you play 10 times and not only tests but demagnetizes due to the frequency..

Used for cartridge “demagnetizing”
You can also use this track to loosen up the cantilever’s suspension to help break in a new cartridge. Play these tracks five to ten times after every 300 hours of normal LP playback.
