My closet is filled with old bank statements and my plan is to scan them with my Fi-6130 fujitsu scanner into my computer and then store it on the symology 1812.

But to prevent further clog I was thinking of putting all my statements on line. My wife is nervous about identity theft. What measures do the smart people on this forum take to prevent issues?

Yes I am familiar with that scanner. Chose between the Fujitsu and the neatdesk..

Hey my friend,

Don't put them online. Scan them, put them in a thumb drive, stick em in a safe deposit box or someplace secure. Erase from your hard-drive so they can't be touched.

Even the BEST systems get hacked here and there. And they have tons more protection as we do.

You can leave the thumb drive home, but lock it with bitlocker.

Oh, and if you ever travel with a laptop, etc. I hope you have bitlocker on that - It encrypts your drive so you have to use your password to boot, sign in. If someone STEALS your Laptop, the drive is encrypted. Several bad attempts to get in and boom. They are NOT getting data off that drive. If you goof, there is a way because when you set it up, you will store away a 64 character key to unlock just in case....whew

Yes, NEVER store anything on-line or in the cloud! I won't even store a single worthless MP3 in the cloud. I do need to back up my system myself so it's kind of the pot calling the kettle black here. Anyway, I am going to back up just my important data on an external HDD and a thumb drive copy. Rob, I like your idea and will look into it for myself. I don't travel or anything, but still......

So no one here would bank on line?

Well, I can't speak for anyone else, but just speaking for me, the answer realistically, would be as little as possible. Unfortunately, financial institutions put your accounts on line without giving you a choice of opting out. However you do have choice after that. Personally I do NOT pay my bills on-line, ever. I don't do deposits on-line either and when purchasing something on-line I never use my bank account. I use my credit card then pay it with what I saved for said item. Unfortunately, that as safe as it gets and it's still vulnerable.

I will not..
Bank Online
Pay Bills Online
Login to any Insurance or Financial website where they will switch me to Paperless

My cyber presence is a handful of Forums like this, a Facebook page where I rarely say or post anything more than a Like, a Linked In account for work contacts, and a few email accounts

No eBay, no Paypal, no on-line anything.

I have a single credit card for any online purchases.

I work with software, computers, and servers and do not trust them or those who have nothing better to do than hack sites and take systems down.

I have every check stub and statement for EVERYTHING in a paper copy and refuse to get it online and make all of them mail me copies of my information.

If systems go down or power goes down, I have everything I need to back anything or question up with a paper copy. I get rid of some things over 10 years old.

Wow, same here! I don't and won't even have a Facebook page or any social media thing like that and absolutely no paypal or ebays! Those are extra vulnerable! Yes, when it comes to bills, if they can't send me a paper invoice with remittance so I can write a check, I won't do business with them. I even fought tooth and nail about Direct Deposit at my employers until 2011 when I finally lost the battle and went with it. (Still nervous about it). I shred stuff that is 7 years and older too.

I do bank online, I do pay bills online. Its just a need for modern society. I do not store EXTRA online...LOL

So likes its been said..shred the old ones, go paperless and let the big bank worry about keeping your data...breeches COST THEM BIG TIME...per occurrence to each individual...that is of course if you even know about it....hehehehehehe

I have already had my identity stolen once. I don't care for it to happen again since it is a huge pain in the ass.

I do have Direct Deposit because they would not do it any other way because we are a global company, but I make them mail me the copy so I don't have to waste my time going online to see it.
