...and how the labels and streaming companies are in cahoots to capture the majority of the economics, leaving very little transfer payments to the musicians/content creators through the use of arcane, dubious and in some cases potentially deceitful practices. The report is called: "FAIR MUSIC: TRANSPARENCY AND PAYMENT FLOWS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY -
Recommendations to Increase Transparency, Reduce Friction, and Promote Fairness in the Music Industry."

To be fair the report was sponsored by Rethink Music, a project of Berklee Institute of Creative Entrepreneurship, which is affiliated with the famous Berklee School of Music in Boston, and so my guess is it's informed by the biases/interests of music content makers. Having said that, it looks quite comprehensive and extensively researched. The whole issue of artist compensation and the streaming companies has come up in the popular press when a big time celebrity like Taylor Swift bans her music from streaming site XYZ for lack of payment but what this report really points to is how difficult the labels and streaming companies make it for artists (especially your run of the mill artist) to get paid for their work via the use of obfuscation and questionable business practices.

I first saw mention of the report via a Michael Lavorgna summary of it here: The Music Industry's Unholy Mess Uncovered | AudioStream and then I followed the link he provides to the specific report here: Rethink Music

I have downloaded the report but not yet read it, having only read Lavorgna's highlights of it and skimming through the report itself but this should make for some interesting reading for those who are interested in understanding how this business works and what the challenges are for artists, the music labels and these streaming providers are in the digital music age.

For those who are interested in the full report, I have also attached a PDF of it here

Admin can you please fix the title of this thread. That should be "Music" and not "Musing." Thanks.
