Interesting read on speaker designs

I can't help but think that if he were to come up with a product that was more cosmetically pleasing he'd enjoy greater commercial success.

Are you familiar with his Audio Artistry stuff? Sorry can't link yet (working on it), but the Beethoven was 1998 Stereophile Loudspeaker of the Year Award, a search will yield pics. Not too shabby looking.

cheers

Whatever Happened
I agree with much of what Siegfried writes, but not all, especially about (music) surround.
If done right, the results can be quite good (I'll link later, even quoting your link above is a no go:D).
Plus it should be noted that he's ok with "surround" derived from 2ch. But 2ch is quite simply insufficient sampling of a complex soundfield (pardon the pun).

Couple of questions Mike.... What was/is Claytons relationship with Emerald? Is the new company Lumina actively shipping product?
Are these speakers using DSP like the Emerald Designs?

Clayton started Emerald Physics in 1978 and he owned it until 2010 when he sold it to Underwood. Since the the knowledge on these speaker designs are so specialized, Clayton remained on through a contract to help Underwood with sound engineering of new models. Going forward however, Clayton is 100% focused on Spatial.

Yes, Spatial Audio (Lumina Speakers) is actively shipping products. He has pairs going to Europe and Canada this week.

No DSP. That's the "break through" as Clayton says - making them passive - while still retaining the same linearity and great measurements.

AJ - I actually ordered the Statements which are complete open baffle top to bottom. Here are the specs:

+1 on the surround sound systems. They can reproduce music unlike any 2-channel system.....if done correctly. I am currently putting together a surround system using MBL 101e speakers. Well, I'm using (3) MBL's (L-C-R).....because that is all my wallet could absorb at this moment. The remaining speakers will be of another brand. I might use my (4) Infinity Modulus speakers for the remaining surround speakers, until I can reload my budget.

Sound like a stellar system there Jerry. To be clear, I mean the material and how it is recorded, not just setup. I'm hearing good things about the Isomike 4 ch stuff and I myself use a variation of Linkwitz's Logic7 enhanced 2ch stereo (4ch). And then there is the real deal: AES E-Library » Perceptual Soundfield Reconstruction a 7 point capture with 5ch output described here: onhifi.com -- Features Archives
Practically speaking though, the vast majority of available music is 2ch constructs. So in that sense, I agree with SL regarding maximizing utilization of 2ch/stereo. But as JJ correctly points out, it cannot possible capture, or reconstruct the original.
A better title would be, "Whatever happened to the original soundfield?" :)

This sounds similar to what I am going to try this time around......making a 5 channel surround system from the original 2 channel feed....without going thru any processing. I will be creating a 5.4 system (L-C-R-SL-SR and 4 subs). We are working on a circuit to create a lifelike center channel, and isolate all channels from one another to avoid any crosstalk. I always wondered why recording were not recorded from 5 or more positions on stage, with maybe a center overhead ambience channel ?? That is what you hear when you go see a band live.
