Jack - did you read anything about the source? Inside the black and white one it says mastered from the original tapes and they go on and on about how amazing all 31 songs sound.

I always assumed it was digital tape like a Nagra since it was done in the mid-90's by a local company in Philly that Eva paid for out of her own pocket by cashing in her retirement 401k. If it is done correctly like on the early Lyle Lovett albums and the work at Audioquest the sound can be exceptional. I think as much as the recording medium changing so much of the bad sound we remember from the early digital recording era is a combination of laziness and lack of knowledge as to the differences from analog tape. And there was some real crap released.
 
Mike, thanks for the Eva Cassidy recommendation. I am a fan of hers and didn't know this album was out. Just ordered a copy from Acoustic Sounds.

Seriously, would love to compare this to my old standby Eva Compilation
from 10+ years ago. Forget the name. Mine isn't S & P label, but it sounds
very good. Finally received the Werner Jagusch Crossovers for my Altec's.
You should check them out. Your Strad's sounded wonderful last time.
 
Had to check Discogs! So it's SONGBIRD of course. There were 2 released in 1998 on LP.
One was on S & P label, done at Acoustic Sounds by Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman. Then there was a UK pressing from HOT records, mastered @ Abby Road studios. I have to check, but I'm almost sure mine is the latter UK pressing....

I have the 16/44.1 download from HD Tracks and it doesn't sound good either. [emoji20]

The vinyl is sublime. Stunning recording. The digital is awful. I think they used Class D tech for the digital version. [emoji6]

So the AP Hoffman pressing is a bit hot sounding? I don't find my Hot label pressing to sound Hot at all. Any more feedback on NIGHTBIRD, or for that matter, the new versions of the other LP's. I find Eva By Heart to be another really good one, but I only have the CD. Live at Blues Alley is great, but this was never available on vinyl. I believe however, that some of her others albums include cuts from LABA.
 
Great call Mike. They really did a great job on this one. Very quiet vinyl, nicely capturing the intimacy of the setting. It was so nice to hear the rest of the songs from this show. Great band, and as you all know, THAT VOICE. (-:
