I’ve got to tell you what I witnessed yesterday at my local record hunt. I came across this one table with a family selling some records. The mother and two young daughters were manning the table at the time. One daughter was 7 and the other was 8 years of age. When I walked up the 7 year old was actually describing and dissecting one to the records to her mother. She then went on to explain some of the relationships of other records and artists as best she could.
My jaw hit the floor! I could not believe what this 7 year old was doing! I looked at her mother and asked if she was training her, her answer was “no”. After shaking off the shock I then asked the mother if she sits her down and has her listen to music and she said, “no, she hears what’s on the radio in the car, but we also are careful about what we expose our children to”. I was not going to let that answer suffice. I suggested that she start doing so immediately! I told her that her daughter is so ready!!! I told her about the benefits of exposing her daughter to good music and having her listen as she seems to really take to it like a fish to water. I suggested that if she is worried about the types of music and all that she expose her daughter to classical, folk, folk rock, etc. classic music from certain eras such as the sixties (ok sadly , maybe avoid The Who until she is 19 or something) and of course avoid rap and modern pop and other such crap nobody really needs. I told her “I don’t know what radio stations you listen to in the car, but I wonder if your daughter is not already dodging those arrows you’re talking about.” I told her there is a whole world of “safe” music she could expose her daughter to and that she would never run out. (Her daughter was already rattling off her favorites) I told her that if she does this she will see her daughter’s grades go up and she will turn into a beautiful butterfly of a person. The mother was thanking me for my compliments, but I told her I was serious. I told her: “look at your daughter, listen to her! See what I see and hear what I hear, please cultivate that! Your daughter is ready!”
