Does anyone tried the 40.1 (or 40.2 for that matter) with Gryphon amplification that can share some thoughts?
I'm intrigued by these speakers, although I do feel that I won't have the room to accommodate them (around 25m2). Listening position at about 2 mts...
Hello,
25m2 is enough for the big Harbeths.
I never heard Gryphon amps with them.
What I can say is that the 40.1 do love power, but imho they do not appreciate to be fed with LOTS of power.
In my 40m2 room, the Shindo CCQs ( 2 x70W of tubes in class A ) are indeed too powerful for them. The bass is too strong for my room. But at low level, they are wonderful. They fill the room with magic presence and weight.
Similarly, my Nagra MSA amp ( 2 x60W of MOS FET transistors, AB class) is ideal at normal and high volume. It does not feed the boomer as the Shindos. Less weight and presence at low volume though.
At normal volume, the McIntosh MC225 ( 2 x 30 W ! ) is fabulous. But won't reach very high volume without clipping and lacks presence at low volume.
With 2 x MSA in mono ( 120 W ) , you get too much power : the sound becomes too heavy in the bass ( exactly like the big Shindos) and lacks the finesse of a single amp in stereo.
Conclusion : try before buying. The 40 are very difficult to amplify correctly. They need power. But not too much !!
