HQ Player

I agree... if a new version has some value added feature or performance that would be one thing, but a new version simply to keep the software running is not right, in my view. But more importantly in my case was that the new version came out so quickly after I just purchased the current version and being asked to pay full price with a small discount given to people who have used the product for six or more years, affectively asking me to pay double the price... that was the crux of the problem.

The bottom line, if I found something that sounds as good, integrates perfectly with Roon, and has better customer service, at this point I would buy it without hesitation. And honestly, Jussi still has the opportunity to make this right.... but since he had no interest in doing it at the time I don't see any reason to expect him to now.

Yea, burn a customer and see what happens.... and I am a reasonable guy. I have worked retail (and managed stereo stores) and am a software engineer so I do understand all sides of the issue, and therefore 100% believe that I was very reasonable in my conversation with Jussi.

Euphony Stylus is an alternative that some listeners prefer to HQPlayer. Much less computer-intensive, less expensive and works well with Roon. There is info at audiophilestyle.com

Euphony OS w/Stylus player setup and issues thread - Music Servers - Audiophile Style

and others. There are a couple of columns in the last two Copper magazine issues about it as well.

Euphony Stylus is a full operating system, replacing Windows on my PC Server? You run Roon Core on the machine also? Can you do remote desktop for maintenance, etc. (I have my machine in my audio rack without monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.).

:)... I must be an expert in FMEAs by now then... maybe even the king of FMEAs :P.

Ha! :D

Yeah, I've done a lot of them with my teams, as well. Many with the oligonucleotide manufacturing teams....they'd have a raw material variance and start failing lots, then freak out and call my manager, "Help! We need Stephen in here!" This what happens when you put a new process in place without a DOE to back it up and ensure it's in statistical control, because as we know, it's all about the transfer function. 😜 LOL...

I don’t know all the options available for using Stylus. There is a developer run Website in addition to the audiophilestyle topic threads. It is designed to be headless, and you can definitely run Roon Core (Linux) and Stylus on the same machine although best sound quality is said to be when they run on different machines (I am considering adding the Euphony Stylus “Endpoint” to my server, but there are other options to that end depending on your hardware). I am not sufficiently adept at programming so I opted for the plug and play solution, but some users at audiophilestyle have gone deeply into the various opportunities for customization and optimization using a variety of hardware and programming options.

If you are talking about running Roon Core in Linux then that indicates it is running on a Linux OS, and unless they have changed would limit the resolution. Certainly through the T+A DAC which required Windows to do Native DSD. This is a requirement to feed DSD256 and DSD512 to the DAC.

I have zero interest in Linux, especially in today's environment with so many hacks and scams. An open OS, no thank you.

If you are afraid of ransomware, Raat is still safe, the leakage is in the upnp protocol. Why should they attack your linux nuc? You won’t pay anyway but install a new m2 ssd.

There a whole lot more issues than just ransomware. Trust me, I am computer security certified. Nothing in the computer world is "safe". Ask Apple users... Apple always promoted that they were safe against attacks and yet over the past years there have been huge Mac attacks occurred.

As I posted, there are many sophisticated users of Stylus at audiophilestyle. I suspect you can run Roon on Windows or Mac and still use Stylus as your endpoint on a different machine.

Possibly....

I have compared and verified that running Roon Core on a separate machine is much better than running the full Roon application (GUI and all) on one machine. Therefore to do as you suggest would require three machines :)...

At this point running Roon Core and HQPlayer both on the Windows server machine and Roon Controller on my Surface works beautifully for now.... Roon Core by itself works pretty darn good on the Windows Server machine also....

At some point I may bite the bullet and purchase version 4 even though it should have been worked out and resolved for me to get version 4 back when this all went down, shortly after my purchasing of version 3. At this point version 3 does all I need so long as it keeps running :).

There are all kinds of possible solutions for "good" computer audio playback; I have yet to see any kind of consensus on one (or even two) "best". One consistent consensus, though, seems to be replacing as many SMPS with LPS as possible. Then one gets into the comparisons of different LPS's.

Yupper... there are always going to be something, and of course people have their preferences :).
