Now that I have my magico S3's, I am looking towards my next upgrade. I have been on the fence between a new TT or DAC. I was just wondering, for all of you that listen to a lot of digital music, how often do you upgrade your DAC or digital player?

Wow

what a question.

For me, I upgrade digital when I hear a definite improvement on all styles of music. In time - probably every 3-5 years.

Not to often as I don't have the disposable income of many on the forums judging by how often I see people upgrade and in turn take the financial hit each time, both the loss on the old and cost of the new.

Just an as indication of how long I've had some of my gear:
My 1st Servo 15a sub was purchased in 2002
the 2nd in either late 2003 or 2004
my SSP in Jan. 2004
Bryston 4B-SST also in Jan. 2004
My tv in 2007
Blu-ray player in 2009

If I hear an improvement and if I can afford it, there is no question.

I'm prejudiced as I listen mostly to vinyl. Digital is a tough call. My personal opinion is that you get a lot more change on the digital side than vinyl. On digital, one has to decide whether to support DSD, MQA, 32 bit, ad nauseum. I've personally bit the bullet for now on digital and said no more changes. I run the original Berkekley DAC and can't afford to keep up with all the changes even though they are probably better.

When I was chasing the latest greatest digital sound, I'd never update twice in the same week. Now I just buy LPs.
