How much power do I need?

Absolute power gives absolute control.

That might be a bit broad of a statement.

Wouldn't that imply that 300Bs can never sound good, because they have so little power? Also Julian Vereker always thought too much power will spoil the sound.

Sounding good is something else. 300b will never impart the kind of grip that a beastly SS monobloc can. Rowen monoblocs will, in bridged mode, put out 3,500w into 0.5ohms for example. Grippy.

Of course an overly powerful amp applied to feeble speakers will cause them to overload and blow up over time, if you open up the throttle for too long.

If you want to grab a pair of speaks by the balls and compel em to play straight and true, flea watt amps need not be considered....as I am sure you know already.

...so you're saying a small two-way stand mounters are suitable for pipe organ music if you just have a lots of power?

Is that what i said ..?? Well i guess you got me .....

Stand monitors will sound better with 200w vs 25w is more akin to what we are discussing ..

And Rowen Monoblocks will never match the midrange magic and sweetness of a 300b SET.

Weren't you commenting on the INT-60/ 3PSR combination? That is at least what I wrote.

Trying to determine whether an amp has enough power w/o specifying the transducer it is used with would be kind of useless.

Exactly, power is just one characteristic that needs to be understood.

I have a hard time getting to 1 watt. That's 107db!

From a long discussion with Mr Aebischer (Rowen) years ago, its the inflection point where the real music is and that is where the amp shattering instantaneous current/power demands are presented and you either get compression or with the beast amps, ride the wave. Classical music is especially notorious for this. When you go from silence to a full orchestral blast, you are begging for compression from any form of amp wimpiness. Biamping is one clever way around this, for those looking for the midrange magic.

Yes , best not to take this out of context , the discussion is clipping ( objective) not sweetness (subjective) as one man Sweetness is anothers anathema ...

:)

Sure, but also clipping point in db of output is relative to the transducer's sensitivity, isn't it?

I am just pushing a bit, as my statement was indeed specific to the INT-60/ 3PSR combination. Otherwise I agree with you, 60 wpc (even if Pass watts) is not sufficient for every LS on the planet.

So you want to calculate now whether it sounds good - LMAO [emoji23].
