The series even got my wife, who doesn't follow sports at all, asking about it. Turns out that Steph Curry is our neighbor, having moved his family to our little town 2 years ago. Now my wife will be able to spot his family shopping and going to our local restaurants and know who he is! We also have a couple of Giants players - Buster Posey is one - living in our town.
Back in 1989, my wife found herself on a plane with the entire 49ers team, going to DC to be feted by President Bush (I) after winning the Super Bowl. She had no idea who they were (she was sitting upgraded to business class and noticed there were a bunch of young people, with a short guy running up and down the aisles whooping it up. Not until they were leaving the plane did someone say, "Those are the 49ers" did my wife catch on. On the shuttle bus from the arrival terminal at Dulles to baggage claim, Bill Walsh was sitting across from her. She knew who he was from TV and got an autograph for our then 10 year old daughter, who was a 49er fan. She also knew the name Joe Montana and knew he was white. So she looked for the biggest white guy (Riki Ellison) to sign an autograph - since she equated size with quality. So Riki signed his autograph. She saw it wasn't Joe Montana, so when they arrived at baggage claim she asked one of the people which one was Joe Montana. She was shocked - he was smaller than I was and was with a super skinny blonde (his wife Jennifer). Joe obliged with his autograph, and today our daughter has a piece of yellow notebook paper with autographs from Bill Walsh, Riki Ellison and Joe Montana. Our daughter's response to Mom - "Why didn't you get Jerry Rice?"
