I read Music Matters had to take out a $1 million insurance policy on each blue note master before emi would release them. And unlike a fine scotch, these tapes are not getting better with age.
Remember though that many original releases were never cut from the original say 3-or multi-track tape but a mixdown tape. KOB was originally a three track so conceivably MOFI/Mark Wilder could go back and recreate that same 2-track tape for the new LP. Or a copy of that tape (s) has already been made.
Also remember that most RCA classical were cut from a 3-->2 track mixdown. And Mercury classical tapes were actually made from a tape a generation earlier than the LP according to Tom Fine.
