This is an excellent read. I run into Jeff at every show. Actually, at CES on Sunday morning, it was just Jeff and I in the Magico/Soulution room. Jeff points are very valid, although I think his estimate of 50% is high. I would say it's closer to 25-35%.
There is no substitute for listening on your own. NONE. However, the reason you work with an experienced dealer is to get good advise on pairings and combinations, someone to ask you questions that you may not have thought about (how big is your room? Is there too much heat coming from those amps for your size of room? Do you have children and need to be very wary of exposed 845 tubes?) The list goes on and on. I think the biggest surprise to my customers is my honesty. I get calls all the time, "hey Mike, I have Revel Studio 2's, what amp do you recommend?" When I tell them "Audio Research REF250's was what I used on mine and loved it", the next question is, "but you don't sell Audio Research, do you?" I tell them "no, I don't, but you asked what I recommended. Well, that was my favorite pairing when I owned them." I tell them friends love the Hegel H30 pairing too, again, "but you don't sell Hegel do you?"
If you are an honest audio consultant first and foremost, then success will follow. This chap may not buy an amp from me for his Studio 2's, but he will come back for a DAC, cables, etc. People can see through the BS when you are ONLY recommending what you sell.
That being said, I have been VERY careful to select products which pair brilliantly together: Magico/Pass/Soulution, Avantgarde/Triode/Air Tight, Focal/Devialet/Pass, etc. The same goes for cabling, sources, etc.
It's one thing to be able to speak about your own products, it's an entirely different situation to speak about other products - especially new products. That's where it's crucial to attend as many shows, events, etc. as you can as a dealer because your role as a Consultant is more important today than it has ever been. If you're a dealer and not at every show, then how can you answer "how does the X Speaker compare to the new B&W 803D3?"
Oh, and by the way, the question I get asked the most is: "how will the Aurender compare to my Mac Mini?" This one always makes me smile. Send me your Mac Mini and I'll tell you.
