Just wanted to introduce myself since this seems like a fairly kind forum. I'm 30, and I love my records more than most things I own. I use a minimally modified Bogen/Lenco: heavy birch plinth, Schick tonearm. I became interested in playback equipment only because I found the shitty Stanton dj turntable that I got when I was fifteen to be shitty indeed. I mean, why obsessively collect a medium only to reproduce it more terribly than 128 kbps mp3? If the iPod significantly outperforms the stereo, something is wrong, right? So I started with a Rega and have never looked back. I'm heavy into estate sales when looking for classical albums, otherwise I spend most of my dollars digitally. Irony, I know. I hope to one day have a system that easily and movingly plays all of my records, no matter what era. Of course, today's records are sadly often terrible, if you are still trying to keep in step with the new hot poop, which I am, if mostly passively. My favorite record of the last two months is easily Frank Ocean's Blonde. Before that, Kanye West's The Life of Pablo. I know, anathema to many of you old dudes out there. Otherwise I am fastidious in my rock 'n' roll consumption. The Cramps and The Fall are perfect. Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Deerhoof just nearly. Jerry Lee Lewis is the Killer. And Elvis is King. I've never been a fan of Nirvana yet my closest friendships were formed out of a common need for the Pixies. These days I think Steve Albini is right about the best Pixies record being Title TK. Just kidding. I do think that it's nearly perfect, however.

Anyways, music... Thank you.

Hi, sounds like you are a real music lover. If you aren't already familiar with old Jazz learn the names and keep them in mind when hitting the estate sales, you may not appreciate it now but will down the road.

I collected LP's at an early age but mostly focused on Rock. A school employee was a record collector and had 1,000's of records, he told me as I got older my music appreciation would expand across more genres, he indeed was correct.

Although I had a decent Pioneer direct drive and used it for probably over 20 years, and I bought it used, I also replaced it with a Rega.

I have to admit I spin more of the little silver discs out of convenience and time but really appreciate the LP's when I have the time.

I do have Nirvana and Pearl Jam, Ten. I'm some over 50, not so much into the Pop. I keep up with current albums I did pick up Adel's 21, most new stuff is going back to pick up classic Jazz Basie, Oscar Peterson, Clark Terry etc. or newer Rock, Nothing More, 3 Days Grace, Disturbed etc. I really like the European Synth Metal like Tristania and Epica.

Thanks all for the warm welcome.

And Mr. Peabody, I'm right there with you. I used to talk the dirt on jazz as if I knew what I was talking about. Then, about two years ago, I heard Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers for the first time. Talk about falling from a great height. I've scored a couple decent jazz albums at estate sales, but those get snatched up pretty fast. That's why I try to limit my excitement to a Mahler recording I've never heard. I still find it insane that the crowds seem uninterested in the classical repertory.

All the best,
Andrew

Welcome from the Northern CA. I'm building a Lenco-based turntable and currently listening to a WTT Reference which does not suck.

Hi Andrew!

Welcome to AS!
It's great to see new blood in the hobby :) Seems like CA has as a fair share of young audiophiles/music lovers, judging by the demographics that stop by my store! Of course, it helps we stock plenty of records, in all genres!
I'm with you on noticing the incredible oversight that is the lack of interest in classical music. We have a pretty good selection in the store, but most are not interested, and the ones that are, just go for the $50+ reissues...
Anyway, if you're ever in my neck of "the southern California", you're more than welcome to stop by! We do have plenty of rock and jazz too, both old and new!

cheers,
Alex

Thanks again all. ACHiPo, I recognize you from the other friendly forum LH. Glad to see a Lenco enthusiast among the members here. And, Alex, I love La Jolla. Although, my San Diego trips typically take me all the way to IB (one of my favorite beach breaks). I love a reason to stop in La Jolla though, so I hope to do so soon.

All the best,
Andrew
