(I'm worried about my stereo)
I live in south Florida, prone to occasional hurricanes. The power company, Florida Power and Light, is installing underground lines now in our neighborhood. They're a year late from when they said that it would be done, but they were here today working on it. We have 3-phase electricity, whatever that means. I'm clueless. We're the oldest and only house on the street that has the 3-phase. I was out there speaking with the guys and noticed the bare wire. I figured it wasn't silver... Every neighbor is also getting aluminum.
One good thing (maybe) is that they installed two new transformers by the driveway to connect the aluminum to the house, the only one on the street, so they could accommodate our 'three-way', so I figure I might be getting some relatively clean and good powerful power.
In my googling today I learned that:
- aluminum is about 60% as conductive as copper
- but with thicker gauges it can be similar
- aluminum oxidizes easier/less that copper
- the long power lines of our nation's power grids use aluminum over the miles for it's light weight and cost effectiveness.
My question in short: Should I be worried?
