DVD’s have about 5 GB (4.7) of data capacity while Blu-Ray has a capacity of about 25 GB. So yes, as an optical storage media Blu-Ray is much more challenging. All other things being equal I’d expect BD’s to have more problems than DVD’s.
As an anecdote my first Blu-Ray player no longer plays Blu-Ray discs at all but has no problem playing DVD’s.
I have a 4K JVC projector and find that upscaling and video processing can make DVD’s look pretty darn good.
