Harbeth 30.1 are outstanding !!!!

Jack,

Excellent advice and I will do that. I am not eager to move these yet. I am enjoying them too much. The fun is back big time. I am really happy and could probably cancel the 40.1 if I had no conscience, but I will not. I will do the right thing and suffer the consequences. :scholar:

When you have both pair of speakers in the room match them up with the same set of equipment and judge them not by the cost, but what sounds the best in your room to "your ears" and sell the loser. A few years ago I had two pairs of speakers by the same manufacturer in my room and one cost double the other. After listening for a couple of weeks I kept the lower end model because it worked better. So trust "your" ears and not the reviews or other minutia.

In my opinion, JL Audio subs are not a fair example of "music" subs no matter how hard they have tried to change their marketing strategy. To my ears they are still "car audio' subs or home theater at best. They bought enough advertising space to get the "audio" magazines and reviewers to "fawn" over them, but they are still what they are. If you want to try subs with the 30.1's it will need to be the REL's or the Vandersteen's. The only other option I am aware of were the ACI Titan or Force, but since Mike has shut that company down that option is now gone. You just have to trust your ears in the end, as that will tell you where to go and where you need to end up. Money spent is not always the answer as some here have found out.

The JL's were an impulse purchase from another site far, far away. I'm just too lazy to box them up and sell them. I agree about the REL's and Vandersteen's.

Joe,
Jack is right. You may end up preferring the 30.1 over the 40.1. The bass of the 40.1 can be difficult to manage in some rooms. But the game is worth playing.
What is priceless with the 40.1 is that they are real full range speakers. As such, they play at the Reference level of HiFi.
I personally am sure that I won't need anything else.
While you will always find speakers with a better bass than the 30.1, you won't find "better" bass than the 40.1. You 'll find "different" bass.
That changes a lot of things.
The 40.1 are able to reproduce a lifelike fully realist double bass, in weight, frequency and tone.

Thank you Jerome. I've been enjoying my 30.1 all day and night. The fun is definitely back. I will experiment with both models and what suits me and my room. I can tell you that I've gone in the perfect direction. Once the excitement wears off and I really discover what I have here, I'll know what to do.

I really appreciate everyone's help and guidance, please keep it coming.

These speaker are also wonderful at low volume. I was afraid they would not come alive but they do indeed.

Joe,
The big strength of my 40.1 is big sound at low volume. Not many speakers can do that. I 'm glad you get it with the 30.1 too !
Less room resonances. Better transparency and details.

I do get it with the 30.1

I'm trying to get to sleep and the music is playing. I just can't stop. Just one more turns into several hours. Amazing.

Very nice Joe! I think the 30.1's are a wonderful speaker. Extremely musical and addicting!

I'm glad you're enjoying the speakers Joe! What I find humorous is that for years speaker makers have introduced different designs to allow their products to either sound better or look better. Or both. Harbeth has stayed the course to their whole BBC monitor philosophy. So for Harbeth lovers the best sound still comes from a simple box design. :)

Doug....

The box simple appearance is just an illusion. It is not simple at all. The cabinets vibrate in a very precisely tuned way.

Agreed. The cabinet itself takes on a life of its own. This reminds me of a few posts in another thread about whether or not gear has a soul.
