Today, my wife and I went for our swearing in ceremony and officially became US Citizens. I got some serious goosebumps during the singing of the National Anthem.

The USCIS officials did a great job at making the entire process very special for everyone and family members.

What I found very interesting was how the USCIS officials told us many many times to never forget where you come from, your heritage, etc. They said if asked, refer to yourself as a "Canadian-American" or for others "Italian-American" and so on.

They gave us a wonderful welcome package including a flag that was made in the US (and not China)....nothing bothers me more than American flags made in China.

The entire process from work visas to green card to US Citizenship took us 15 years.

Yaaaaaahhhhhhoooooo!!!!

Mike, congrats on the long and lengthy journey. That is very, very neat!

Congratulations to you and your wife Mike! Glad to hear that the ceremony was so well managed and meaningful to you, given the many years it took to reach this milestone.

Mike...A big congrats!

I was born abroad and came to the US in 1986 at age 16 as a freshman in college. My family had a green card from the late 1970s, so after arriving in 1986 for college and spending 5 years in the US, I was eligible to apply for citizenship and got it in 1991. I remember the swearing in ceremony vividly. I was living in DC at the time. It was quite an experience to be among all these newly minted US citizens that day. I had taken a few hours from work to go for the swearing in process and when I returned my boss and colleagues had a little celebration waiting for me (cake and champagne :D). It was very memorable!

Conrats Mike. That's a big step. Now you can collect all the benefits your tax dollars pay for, and bitterly complain about our ineffective politicians like the rest of us!

Congrats, welcome to the USA.

I also hate US Flags made in China. When I was in school 10 years ago, the US Army came in to recruit. They handed out Key fobs and other things that said US Army on one side ans Made In China on the other side. Good Grief!

Thanks everyone. Great story Cyril. Thanks for sharing. Getting passport photos done now. :)
