Getting Started in a New Room

We moved from the Alabama Gulf Coast to Seattle this past Christmas to both retire from medical practice, and provide baby sitting services for my grand-daughter.

I had a small room in Mobile measuring 9.5 x 14 feet with a ceiling that sloped from left to right. Nice carpeting and it required a fair amount of room treatment.

New room is more than twice that size! I won the lottery with my wife choosing this house. I was afraid I was going to have a listening room using only headphones...

Initial pictures of the room. with the blue walls. Then one with the room repainted, and split unit HVAC (and new circuit and ethernet point). The floor is a radiant, with hot water circulation. (yes I replaced the boiler already) There are 3 radiant floors, and one stand alone radiator in the house. Heat gain from all that southern facing glass can be an issue.

Lastly, I took a picture of the system playing from the MSB DAC. The pre-amp clicks relays when trying to power up, but will not turn on. I will look at tubes etc. tomorrow. I am praying that there was no actual damage to the unit during the move.

Building some Ikea Kallax units.

More pics as the system progresses. This is just a preliminary setup to hear music.

I will say, when I first got it to play, I was under impressed with the sound stage. I was not sure how it would change from small room to large room. I noticed good wide sound stage, but no definition in the central sound stage. Remedied with changing the phase of one channel (Its hard to determine + and - on both my speakers and amps. I need to put some red dots on those). Very sweet with correct phase.

Very eclectic house, clearly. The vertical wall connected to the ceiling is twisted, and the window is installed crooked. This is on purpose, and much more apparent in the room above, which is our bedroom. On the other hand, the gentleman that did the 2 add ons to the 1922 home built it like a tank, with plywood behind most of the drywall, and large heavy wooden beams, and 1 inch bolts, and iron rods throughout the new parts. There is a bedroom and small living room in the front of the house that are original, and are indeed lathe and plaster.

We are having fun moving in. Probably move out of the rental house over this week.

Almost any speaker will work, but likely closer seating will benefit with early reflections. Obviously appropriate treatment and subs for best integration will determine optimal sound. Enjoy!

Very cool looking room. Also looks like it may be a challenging room. Obviously have to deal with all those reflective walls. I hope your pre-amp is ok... I worried about damage to components during our move a couple of years ago. We did get lucky that everything survived.

Interesting room Bones, experimentation looks to be in order for sure !

Just got back from a trip to Seattle a couple weeks ago, the 'History of Flight' museum is one of the finest IMO !

Today I will be building an Ikea Kallax piece, I got one done yesterday. Then I will be looking into the pre-amp, fuses and tubes. It has a separate power box, with 2 big umbilicals. I hear the relays click on and off when I cycle the power switch, so I do think the power box, and umbilicals are OK. I will check out the fuses, and swap out tubes, but since I don't see the LED light up inside the main box, I think power is not getting to the tubes even.

As for the setup, I came from a near-field kind of space, and those speakers are good for that. I am setting up a similar system, only I get a bit more space. The previous room has only 6-7 feet between the speaker centers. I will be trying more for about 10 feet with this system, having a slightly larger equilateral triangle. The back end of the room will have another functional areas - a reading chair on one side, and a gaming table.

Did find the etherRegen, and some missing cables. Could not get the pre-amp to start. No dislodged ribbon cables, umbilical cables re seated.

Congrats on retirement and the new home. A move across the country is a big deal. Exciting times ahead for you.

Have fun setting up your stereo in the new home. That will keep you busy for a little while.

Whew, dodged that issue. After a very short email with Dan, of ModWright, I had connected the umbilicals in a crossed fashion. There is a left and right…

Anyway, the pre-amp puts that little bit of tube goodness into my system, and allows for using the DAC and the phono amp as needed. My DAC does not have pre in.
