When I was on vacation last month with friends, they had just setup an Echo mainly so he could listen to his Pandora stations where he sits. So I started learning some basic commands to play Pandora, ask the Weather and so on.

While my friends were out, I decided to ask more interesting questions to see just what this gadget can answer. So I proceeded to ask a bunch of off color questions, some of which I got interesting answers to, and some came back as "I don't have enough information to answer that".

One of the less offensive questions I asked was "Alexa, Who's your daddy?" and she replied "I was created by a team of engineers at Amazon"

So after an hour of fun with Alexa I went about my day. The next thing I hear is "What the hell did you ask Alexa?" What I didn't know was that the App on my friends phone keeps track of every question and answer posed. So we had a giant laugh about it all.

Now, I don't know what the Google one can do, but it appears that Alexa is not really programmed to search the internet for answers to simple questions. It only seems to know what was pre-programmed. It couldn't even tell me the substitute for Buttermilk, or answer the question "Do you know what Google is?"

As a novelty, it was fun to play with for a few days, but I would never own any device that stores what I say, ask and do out on the cloud for anyone to hack. I am also not so lazy that I can't just look up the weather. But to each his own.

Ha! Too funny. We are giving up a lot for a little convenience.

A couple years back, for fun, I asked Siri "Do you love me?"

Her answer...

"Look, a puppy!"

Be careful. I heard Alexa is listening at times you don't expect and Amazon is gathering intel.

Yes Mike, from what I understand, it is always listening and recording at least the 60 seconds leading up to you calling her name. Just how much of your private conversations they are storing out on the cloud is debatable.

Don't think for a moment that your phone and smart TV aren't listening, or your phone and laptop camera can't be accessed at will. Orson Wells - 1984 beyond his wildest imagination.
