FLAC or ALAC or ?

AIFF/ALAC if and only if you are a die-hard "I-must-use-an-Apple-product-because-I-am-brainwashed" individual. Or you refuse to get off one of the worst sounding and databasing players out there: iTunes.

I agree that it's a shame Apple can't do a better player than iTunes. Liking what I've read about JRiver. Now I just need some time. June is looking a little better

Thanks, guys, this has been very helpful!

JRiver on Win is the de facto standard for true audiophile playback when implemented correctly.

Not even the highest price transport can touch it.

Sorry -E-, I will put Sooloos thru Meridian's top endpoints (808v3/5 or 818v2) up against anything. For those who must have DSD these are not an option of course.

FLAC AIFF does not matter to me, they both sound as good as WAV to my ears, and so much more user friendly regarding tags.

I do love apple products but hate iTunes. If you insist on using iTunes AIFF it is. Pure Music, think it's about $120 or so allows iTunes to play anything, flac DSD you name it.

JRiver is fantastic and the apple version finally works well. One thing I love about it, is you can view your music based on the files they are stored in, love that.

I have always selected zero for compression, not because I have done comparisons and think it sounds better, but because it just makes me feel better and storage is cheap.

Just to update, I went with the J River Media Center. Spent a month or so of time in front of the TV or while doing other tasks around the house to rip the CD collection to my laptop. Had the files saved compressed in lossless .ape format, I think they compressed to about 70% of uncompressed size. The laptop has a 500GB drive that was pretty underutilized, so there was room for everything, however I will add an external storage device for backup in the near future. Works very slick! Haven't had time lately to play with it much lately, but I'm excited about the ease and quality of playback in a variety of ways.
