I love live music! I typically try to go to at least one live show per month. My wife and I see quite a few shows in the Bay Area each year and I'm ready to make a bold statement...The Fox Theater in Oakland is the best indoor venue on the west coast. It's beautiful, the acoustics are awesome, the crowds are live, and theres always a sense of the rich history that makes the Fox something special. Musicians ALWAYS bring it at the Fox! I saw Lettuce and The Motet play on Friday night and it was another mind blowing experience....2 of the top funk bands in the world descended upon Oakland and I can't stop talking about it. In the last year or so, I've seen Beck, Widespread Panic, and Trey Anastasio at the Fox. The result is always the same...live music with an energy that is unparalleled.

We were around the corner at the Paramount in Oakland on Valentine's Day to hear the wonderful Nicola Benedetti playing the Beethoven Violin Concerto with the London based Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Wonderful acoustics and absolutely beautiful art deco design - nicely kept up, approaching 90 years old.

The best classical music halls in the world for me are two in Europe and one in the US. The two in Europe are the Musikverein in Vienna, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the US one is Symphony Hall in Boston. There are some newer halls that I haven't been to. Disney in LA is quite fine also. I'm not including smaller venues like the wonderful Weill Hall in the Green Music Center at Sonoma State University.

My favorite is the Troy Music Hall in Troy, NY. It is one of the most acoustically perfect venues in the world. It sits on top of a bank in downtown Troy, holds less than 1000, has very small uncomfortable wooded seats, was built in the late 1800's but concerts sound amazing in there for some reason. My wife and I just saw Gregory Porter there Friday night and it was a great show.

I got lucky when it comes to this. I live in the Boston area and visit the Symphony on a regular basis.

My 2 favorite venue's are the very intimate Dakota Jazz club in Minneapolis and the Minnesota Zoo outdoor amphitheater which is also small and intimate. Both get big name performers. Joe Bonamassa sounded great at the Zoo a few years ago. The Dakota is great because you can sit 4 feet from the stage and they have great food and drink.

I have front row seats to see James Hunter and Jane Monheit at the Dakota in the coming months. Going to try and see Lucinda Williams who playing a concert together with Bill Frisell of all people.

One place that I would love to hear a concert is Red Rocks in Colorado.

Bethel Woods, New York. Sat on the grass and saw Santana and CSN for the 45th anniversary of the Woodstock Festival. I can’t wait for the 50th anniversary next year!

My 3 favorite venues for music (non classical)

Corson Auditorium at Interlochen - Outstanding acoustics in an auditorium that holds about 900.

The Ark in Ann Arbor - Very intimate venue that holds about 400 with no seat greater than 40-50 from the stage. Not the best sound system. This is how close most seats are.

Fox Theater - Detroit Venue holds about 5000. Probably the best sound system I have heard.
