Esoteric K-01X versus Schiit Audio Yggdrasil

Bob.......The Oppo BDP-105 Repeat button is at the bottom of your remote control. Press once to Repeat a CD once. Press twice to Repeat a CD continuously. Press three times to turn off Repeat. The full instructions on how the Repeat button works with other discs refer to page 37 of the BDP-105 Owner's Manual.

I calculate this Thursday as the 300+ hours day. So this weekend I'll make the decision of what stays and what goes.

Jeff.......Even at 300 hours the Yggdrasil is not finished settling into its ultimate sonic signature. At 300 hours the Yggdrasil does sound excellent but I discovered additional nuances in the accuracy of timbre, a further relaxing of the upper midrange frequencies, and greater emotional connection with the sound as more hours were logged. My Yggdrasil now has 840 hours of break-in. It is sounding as smooth as silk, as dynamic as real life, and totally satisfying to listen to for hours on end. Color me a happy camper.

Schiit should do a 30 day trial, 15 days is only 360 hours. Not that I was planning on returning it anyway.

I agree. The 15-day trial period is too short, and thus a mistake on the part of Schiit.

Al.......Frankly, I knew after 100 hours, just over 4 days, that the Yggdrasil was special and a keeper. The DAC just keeps sounding more musical every day. By day 10 at 240 hours I was looking forward to listening to the Yggdrasil each day, and it had already exceeded the sound quality of my Wyred 4 Sound DAC2. If a person doesn't know the Yggdrasil is a keeper at 12 days, another 12 days isn't going to change your mind. I think a 15 day trail period is plenty of time to know the essence and potential of the Yggdrasil. Yes, it requires you energize the DAC on day one with a digital signal applied and leave it in this condition 24/7 to maximize the break-in during the first 15 days. If you are unwilling to do that then you are not taking advantage of the opportunity presented to you. If you're not happy at day 13, you will not suddenly be happy at day 28. Sure, a 30 return window seems generous, but in my opinion it is unnecessary if a person is serious about break-in and auditioning the Yggdrasil. Of course, you can never satisfy everyone no matter what you do.

Sure, I knew pretty quickly too that the Yggy was a keeper, but it still was uncomfortably fluctuating in character and quality for quite a while before settling. A 30 day return window would be appropriate since only that would take into account knowing the full outcome. Many manufacturers have a 30 day policy, so I do firmly maintain that it is a mistake by Schiit not to have one as well.

Sure, that's how I broke in the Yggy too.

I agree. 15 days gives you a week to burn in and evaluate with 2-3 days travel time on either end. Can it be done, yes, with careful scheduling. 30 days, however, do not involve the anxiety of meeting a tight deadline.

Anthony.......The travel time to return ship the Yggdrasil is not part of the 15 day audition. You can call Schiit Audio on day 15 and request an RMA and ship it that day. I don't work for Schiit Audio so their policy has nothing to do with me. I am merely sharing my opinion. 15 days appears to have been just fine for Jeff despite him wishing for more time. I am at 870 hours on my Yggdrasil now and loving it.

Thanks for the clarification. That does make a difference, though I might still feel a bit rushed with 12 working days for an audition (shipping from California to DC is usually a 3 or 4-day affair unless an expedited option is chosen) when at least a full week of break-in might be needed to get an honest assessment of what you could be living with long term.

At any rate, yours and others’ testimonials have me intrigued enough to consider the Yggdrasil when I’m in the market for a DAC. I’m already impressed with their business approach, the length of the audition period notwithstanding.

Oh I wasn't wishing for more time, shipping it back isn't practical for me anyway. Just an observation on my part based on the times mentioned to get it sounding the best.

Anthony.......The 15 day audition period begins when you receive the Yggdrasil, not when it ships.

Giving serious thought to replacing my McIntosh D100 with either a new D150 or perhaps a Yggdrasil.

I love the sound of the McIntosh, but cannot help thinking the newer design of the Schitt may sound better.

Any thoughts on the matter?

Are you using the preamp capabilities of the D100? If so the Yggy is a pure DAC, no preamp, that might be an issue.

System synergy is important, you need to try it and see if it works for you. I don't think anyone can give you a definitive answer.

I can tell you the Yggy is in a different league than the DAC in my C47 preamp.

My D100 serves as the DAC for my transport, and also as a headphone amp.

I do know that I wil require a separate headphone amp if I elect to purchase the Yggy.

my main concern is to get the best possible DAC for 2.5k to 3k$.

thanks for the input.
