Educate me please re: DSD files & DACs that'll play them.

Nope, just the same songs that sound good to the ear & are mastered well. I couldn't give a flying f*ck about dsd or pcm, I'm in it for the sound. Don't want to over think things too much.;)

I get ya, but for fun, compare the Eagles Hotel California CD vs 24/192 download from HDTRACKS. There are lots of others like that. Fleetwood Mac, etc. Night and day.

Thanks for the insight Mike.

The Meitner is the one DAC I didn't listen to. My dealer gave the opportunity to take the EMM DAC2X as a loaner until my Debussy arrived (as opposed to his Debussy loaner), but he didn't have the driver CD and EMM didn't have the drivers on their Website, and even worse they were closed for the month (all on summer vacation at the time). So, I just got a Debussy loaner. Guess I didn't miss much. I did get a chance to hear the Meitner in his shop with Maxx3's, a Boulder 2060 amp and 1010 pre, but the more I hear the Maxx3's the less I like them. The Alexia tweeter spoiled me I guess.

With the Raidho's being super accurate, I wonder if the DAC2X would be too much? Either way, I'm happy to learn that you're embracing digital again :)

So what are you using to play back your digital since your Marantz is gone?

Bryan - I was fortunate enough to participate in three separate "big DAC shootouts" this summer with the fine folks from the Suncoast Audiophile Society. We tested (blindly) a variety of DAC's, including the Marantz NA11S1, DCS Debussy, Bel Canto, Meitner MA-1 and many others. Each and every time, the Meitner MA-1 came out on top. Three weeks ago, I sold the Marantz NA11S1 (which routinely finished in second by the way) for the Meitner MA-1. Compared to the DAC2X, I find the MA-1 a more smoother operator, while not losing any of the finer detail. What bothered me about the DAC2X, was that it was over-the-top with detail, to the point of being edgy and annoying. I had the DAC2X for 9 months (an eternity for me!), but with the Strads, Aida's, etc, always found it a bit too much in the uber detail department. The Meitner MA-1 is the right balance.

I'm sure the MSB DAC VI and others are better, but for now, the Meitner MA-1 is a sweet sounding unit. Smooth, with detail, never crossing over into the edgy field.

That being said, I am eyeing a Linn Klimax DS and hope to have a demo in my system in the next few weeks. Not sure I can give up DSD though now that it is gaining steam with Sony's backing. Unless the Linn Klimax DS is vastly superior (when comparing the PCM 24/192 version to a DSD file for example), then the MA-1 will stay.

Cost is also a big issue. The MA-1 is a killer good piece at $7000, while the Linn Klimax DS retails for north of $20,000. That's MSB VI territory (unless a deal can be had). All three are excellent performers....it all comes down to the importance of DSD, value, etc.

Mike I understand exactly what you are saying, hence my reference to the mastering of the music.
The industry needs a benchmark for all recordings but that won't happen, so now we are stuck with an engineers interpretation of what he thinks the sound should be to be at it's best.
Put ten people in a room & you'll get ten different sounds if each were to do the mastering on a cd/dvd etc. I've heard dvd's that have really disappointed me & also some cd's that have excelled beyond my expectations, it's the mastering. Then again, I've owned & heard some pretty amazing systems too which helps.
I've chased the holy grail of digital in the search of accuracy & revealing all that is in the recordings, once I found it I stopped being one with my music, the enjoyment started to wane, my liking the music was not the same. Harmony is seven letters of all encompassing wisdom for me, some call it synergy.

If you are talking about a PS3, there is a supposedly working copy of a Firmware rollback patch starting to creep out now. Reports say it is to work on some newer PS3s, too.

Yes there is a way to roll back. There's a guy in Flushing, NY that does this, and I can attest it works (he downgraded me from 4.x). He's using something like Progskeet to write directly to the NAND chips. Search ebay for "PS3 downgrade" and you'll probably find him, just pack it really well.

Edit: his ebay id is: game4cash. He doesn't seem to have this service for sale atm, but anyone doing NAND PS3 downgrades should be able to do it.

Thanks Jin! Very good to know!

Just configured and enjoyed my first dsd blue coast downloads on my Ayre dsd dac. Very nice and really adds an enhanced live like sound. Hopefully more sites will make downloads simple like hd tracks

Nick - have you tried the new Acoustic Sounds Hi Res DSD download site?

Thanks for the info Mike, I had no idea they were offering DSD now. It's good to see more mainstream stuff being offered. Anyone know if these are DSD 64 or DSD 128?

When its DSD128 they explicitly say so. There was a 4 song DSD128 album offered last week on another site for $5.99

Item: Love Letters - Yamina(DSD128)
