Hello Friends,

1. I am from Mumbai, India and am planning to upgrade my present system to the following:-

(a) Speakers - Dynaudio C4s or B&W 800 D3.

(b) Power Amp - Mcintosh 452 or Mcintosh 601 (Monoblocs).

(c) Pre Amp - Mcintosh C 52.

(d) CD Player - SA 8005.

(e) Cables, Power and DAC - Not decided.

(f) Turn Table - In the Future.

2. Please advise me whether I should go for Dynaudio C4 or B&W 800 D3. I have heard both speakers but on different setups as the dealers in Mumbai are different. I liked both but B&Ws are costlier. Also if I choose B&W, should I go for Mcintosh 601 Monoblocs instead of Mcintosh 452 Amp? I listen to Rock, Folk, Country and may be mix of other music.

Thanking You All

Regards,
T. K. Varghese

Thank you. Let me find out whether the products mentioned by you are available in Mumbai.

Hello and welcome!

I cannot comment on comparing the 2 speakers you noted, but when I bought my Dynaudio speakers years ago, I went head to head with comparable B&Ws. I chose the Dyns finally for several reasons including the non-fatiguing silk tweeters. (and the speaker not looking like a cyclopes)

Thank you for your great feed back. I will also consider what you have suggested.

Hi TK, can you tell us a little about the size of your room? The 800 D3's can be real boomy suckers.

Room size is about 35 feet × 25 feet. Thanks.

Wow! You shouldn't have any bass issues with either. I would probably go B&W 800 D3's with a room that big. Just make sure the first and second reflection points are treated with absorption or diffusion or a combination.

I like Dynaudio and prefer them to B&W. However, if you are using Mac I feel the better synergy would be with the B&W, and, get the monoblocks. I haven't heard 800's with a lot of amps but Mac had them soundin better than ARC or Classe, IMO.

If Rock is your main genre, have you listened to other amps, possibly something with a bit more transient impact? Mac is good, I personally like something not as sweet for Rock. The C4's with something like Levinson, Krell, D'Agostino's integrated, Boulder, etc. would be a good combo.

The C4's need some current, and, seem to sound better with the type of amps mentioned above. The B&W seem to benefit from the textured sound of the Mac.

That's how I hear it anyway. :)

Great feed backs. I shall audition these speakers with suggested Amps. Problem is trying out these under one roof. Probably I need to evaluate them separately and then specifically ask the dealer to set those few I have finalised for an audition. Thank you all for your valuable inputs.

I say Dynaudio C4 platinum or Sig II all day long over any B&W speaker.

And don’t worry about pairing with McIntosh amplification. It’s a wonderful combination.

MC601s will provide all the current you need. Dyns definitely LOVE current and my pair certainly come to life as I turn the volume up.

I have Contour 30’s with 601s, very pleased with the combination. I know some would be worried this pairing would be boring given the reputations of Dyn and Mc warm/smooth sounding and too much of a good thing but they are misconceptions.

Go with C4 and 601s.

the marantz sa8005 is a real gem but its fairly low down the range , at such a level as the c4/ 800 speakers would not a better cd player be in order ? such as the new sa10 model ?

Thanks a lot friends. You all have explained the pros and cons in detail and would definitely help me in taking a decision. Shall also try out the equipmentsource you all have suggested. Thanks.
