DSD versus PCM - Is DSD really better or is it a 'myth'

Which one is better, DSD or PCM?

There's a very practical answer: of course PCM is much better. There are at least 1000 x more music titles available in PCM, on the old trusted CD format, than on DSD.

Or are audiophiles not music lovers? Do they care more about sound than about available music? Do they care more about the best possible sound in absolute terms than about the best possible sound from the format that carries most of all the recorded music?

If that's the logic, then vinyl is king. [emoji14]

But in all seriousness, you make a good point. It's a shame Sony abandoned things. They had a good opportunity.

I took my wife (who is 46) with me to this year's THE Show in Irvine and she had a very enjoyable time, much better than she had expected (she had attended RMAF for about 2 half-days in 2012). It's true she may have a higher tolerance than most for creepy people, but there is definitely a difference in attendees at different shows. Most comments about THE Show Newport Beach (Irvine) mention the greater numbers of women and young people than at many other audio shows.

Rob, my wife and I were in LA for part of my training, and NewPort Beach is hip and fresh so that would be an easier sell...that and the relative proximity to Central coast vineyards....

This is an interesting topic guys. Maybe someone can start a women and HiFi discussion topic.

I remember sitting down next to two lovely young ladies (probably in their early 30's) at Axpona this year. We were hearing the same demo.

I must admit, I thought their husbands would appear around the corner. But then I heard the one say to the other "how do you think these would sound with my McIntosh amp?"

I struck up a conversation and was delighted to talk shop with them. They had both had some amazing systems presently and in the past.

It's a pity we don't see more of this. But getting our significant others interested is a step in the right direction.

Either of you care to start a thread on this?

Mike, you were had. Those were industry plants preying upon unsuspecting audiophiles....:S

Touche. I listen to primarily Redbook for those reasons. BUT, I am also a sound whore so.....

LOL.

How can someone with no equipment to playback DSD or even HiRez PCM tell us what's better?

You are missing the point of my post of course, a point that others have well understood. But then, it seems I have been a favorite target of yours lately. Shoot before you think...

More doesn't make it better.

There are more Prius on the road than Tesla, does that make it a better car?

In a audio world now loaded with DSD and HIREZ PCM recordings, you're the only person I know that bought a Redbook only transport and doesn't have some form of PC audio.

Your flawed analogy once again shows that you have missed the point. Oh well.

The only person you know? Then you haven't been paying attention. And i wouldn't exactly call 0.1 % or less of the entire music market "loaded".

Quality wise - yes the Prius probably is the better car. Not to mention the quality/stability of company that stands behind it.

If we are talking quantity - MP3 is king, no other format comes close to sales.

Mark.......Yep, for sure, so the little lady will have a place to sleep other than a local motel.

I can only assume your age, life events, and the fact that you don't care if you are close to the snapper or not. :)

The Tesla Model S, owing to its low centre of gravity is the sharpest breaking, best handling road car on the market. It is also the fastest - or thereabouts - from 0 - 60mph.The batteries last longer than the Prius as well (based on the Roadster).

Tesla is full electric, unlike the hybrid Prius, which my wife owns…thus range is like 150miles between charges.I heard that 30mins high current charging gives a 80% "fill up".

Tesla is in most ways the better car.

None of this detracts from your main point….mp3 is indeed king.

King of crap. Just like there are more McDonalds restaurants around the world than there are high end steak houses, it certainly doesn't mean that McDonalds' hamburgers taste better than a good quality steak. In fact, I would argue that McDonalds' hamburgers taste far worse today than when the chain opened. Ditto for their fries. So much for progress/continuous improvement.

prof and i both seem to agree with you. King of crap certainly does not mean "better" and that we all seem to agree on.

Mark.......You may assume whatever you wish. It's what everyone does anyway. My age has nothing to do with it. I have never allowed any woman to have that kind of power over me where she thinks she can tell me what to do, try to control my behavior, or for that matter where I can sleep other than my own bed. I love my woman. She's a wonderful gal but I don't cower to her about anything. If you empower women with control over you, then you get what they choose to dish. Groveling isn't my cup of tea. Being close to whatever has never been an issue, either. I make no apologies for who I am, nor should I have to.

Gotcha. Are you and Gary Protein brothers?
