So what does it take to get the Lumin D1 to play DSD files from an external hard drive?

Key word being "should." a Friend of mine just bought one and has an external hdd with DSD files and can't get the lumin to see the files on the hdd.

Hi Mark,

If he has the files on a NAS, they need to be served with MinimServer

If the hard drive is plugged into the Lumin:

INPUT:

USB storage, flash drive, USB hard disk (Single-partition FAT32, NTFS and EXT2/3 only)

Yes, likely he is using a MAC OS formatted external HD and that's why it can't read from it or the files are buried in too many subdirectories. Just a hunch...

His dealer will help when he opens. He has been struggling since last night and I was just curious as to what it took for the Lumin to see DSD files on a HDD. He can play back PCM files just dandy from the same HDD, but it can't see the DSD files.

This should probably be in the Lumin forum. I don't know if all Lumin platforms use the same OS, but with the S1 there is no issue seeing/playing DSD files on a direct attached USB drive. I assume that is what is meant by external hard drive. Of course, being software, just because it works for me doesn't mean it works in all scenarios.

A year ago or so I found that many UPNP servers don't recognize DSD files. MinimServer is one that does. I switched to that and have had no problems at all.

He tried it both ways, HDD hooked to the server and hooked straight into the Lumin.

Verify that the files are in DSF (or DIFF) format.

If the files are iso instead of dsf, download sacd_extract program and run this command line.

To convert SACD.iso file to dsf files:
sacd_extract -2 -s -c –i"SACD.iso"

I'd also like to add that:
- DST compressed file is not supported, i.e. DST inside DFF file is not playable
- Multichannel DSD (or any file format) is not supported

But these limitations should manifest as a file that can be seen but not playable, instead of not being able to see the file at all.
