I am experiencing frequent, at times constant, dropouts when streaming Tidal on my A-1. It is connected via an ethernet connection directly to my Xfinity modem which is delivering a download speed of at least 25 Mbps, sometimes much higher. Any suggestions as to what might be causing this?

The first thing that I would do is switch the Ethernet cable with another cable and try out.

If it is only with MQA tracks it is "probably" a similar issue that is being addressed with dCS and Roon/The tidal. The music starts playing, it detects the MQA header then you get a stutter as it switches to the MQA filter. After that I get no dropouts stuttering until there is no MQA content for about 7 seconds. It then goes back to my filter of choice until it detects another MQA track. I'm not sure if this what you are hearing.

Other than that I have no dropout issues with Tidal at all.

Problem solved. It was Xfinity's cable modem. It was delivering decent (but not up to promised spec) download speed via it's built in Wi-Fi router, but much much slower via the network cable. Xfinity's technician replaced the faulty modem/router and I now have 290Mbps via both ethernet and Wi-Fi. So far, no dropouts.

Although a certain really popular and inexpensive MQA USB DAC seems to work as described (and therefore may cause a stutter) and some other USB DAC forces all MQA and non-MQA music to go through the MQA processing, Lumin does not work like either of these. Lumin pre-determines whether a music is MQA or not, and setup the decoding path properly, before actually playing a music.

In case of Roon, this determination is done by Roon Core and such format metdata is sent to an endpoint via RAAT, so the RAAT endpoint can do the right thing.

Fantastic! When you said that your internet provider was giving you great speed I never thought that the wired Wi-Fi speed could be lower or worse quality than Wi-Fi. Great to know for future reference!

Xfinity has had a bit of a problem with the latest batch of re-badged gateway routers designed to work with their phone app. I went through three of them in a short period of time until I got one that worked up to spec on both sides. If you look on Amazon the reviews reflect that for the same units with the Arris name badge on them. Quality control along with service is not an Xfinity strong point and if you pair that with Tidal's similar customer service policy you can have issues.

You either have drop out issues or you don't. 7 second gap isn't an issue?

I returned from Axpona yesterday and turned on my computer and upgraded the latest Lumin app, 6.1.3, and tried to play MQA albums through the app, through the Tidal icon, but everyone of them stuttered and would not play continuously.I did not have any problem with non-MQA albums...Any thoughts.??

Did you reboot it after the upgrade? That upgrade only applied to it's working with Spotify Connect so MQA issues would be on the Tidal end.

Jack...we had a few tornados take out the power 2 days ago and it took out our power until late this afternoon. After turning everything back on tonight I forgot to reboot my router which I did after writing my question. Everything is fine now. Thanks for your reply..dave....ps:..sorry I missed the dinner...our Axpona group changed our already scheduled dinner time and I could not make it. I am sure all had a great time...

Glad you got it working again. I learned after much frustration that any time the Lumin app doesn't act the way I think it should to reboot. Seems to solve most all problems related to the Lumin family and I suspect the Esoteric streamers too.

The OpenHome / UPnP, RAAT, Spotify, AirPlay discovery protocols stress the broadcast message handling of the network infrastructure far more than typical computer web browsing does. Some routers (or even switches) are not robust in handling such traffic, therefore they need to be rebooted whenever a problem appears.

The iPad also needs to be rebooted just as we would need to reboot Windows PC from time to time.
