Drobo or other potential NAS

Hello all,

I am contemplating the construction of a computer audio system. I worked for a large electronics store for several years and one item I looked at was a NAS from DROBO. They have some new models that support SSD's and since the cost of SSD's are dropping all the time, I think by the spring I will be ready to take the plunge.

Has anyone here used a DROBO unit (or, similar device) and used SSD drives?? The cool and quiet operation that is offered by SSD's (over HDD's) is attractive. Also, if one where to load a NAS up with SSD's, would 500Gb drives be sufficient?? I know already that some of the new high rez files can take up 3-5Gb and I assume that file size will only grow as recording technology advances....

MANY thanks,

The short answer is that I would choose Synology or QNAP over DROBO. You may want to google DROBO - I remember reading some QC problems.

As for SSD - they are great for a laptop or even desktop when you want a quick boot or quick save and open of files, but I'm not sure they are best used for a NAS. Too expensive and not enough storage. I would instead recommend WD RED 3TB NAS drives. Less expensive, much more storage capabilities. On a NAS, not sure the speed benefits of a SSD would be realized unless you were copying massive amounts of data all the time.

YMMV.

i agree with Mike. I don't know about quality issues but from a compatibility standpoint I would say that first QNAP and second Synology are the brands of choice as all the relevant software / servers are developed for these brands.
From my own experience I can say that QNAP works like a charm. Very fast and reliable. And I do know some others who have good experiences with Synology. So Drobo might work fine but unless you are an expert or can do everything you want on a Drobo I would go for QNAP or Synology...

I had a couple friends have a lot of problems with their drobo 3-4 years ago. No clue if they have gotten their QC fixed. They gave up and went w something else.

I use a pair of DROBO RAID 5 15TB attached to my movie server via USB 3. Never had any trouble for the past 2 years. I use a PC as my NAS for my music server because copying files to a dedicate NAS is slow. With my PC serving as a NAS I can copy over 100MB per sec.
