Does a guy really need 5 copies of his HD files?

State of Confusion
I've had some extra time lately and have been backing up my music files (finally). When I download Hi-Res files from HD Tracks I have them automatically stored in a folder on my desktop. This morning I realized that I have all of these files on one computer, my NAS, a memory stick, and two external HDD's. I really don't think I need that many copies! The funny thing is, they're all in the same house so if it burned to the ground I'd lose all of it anyway. :weird:

Maybe I'll keep the memory stick in my car... :)

A stick in the car is a good idea for sure. But redundant backup copies are always good as long as they are on different devices. Hard Drives can go at any time or other PC catastrophic failures.

Main copy
Backup copy
Offsite backup copy (major PITA for the first main, read: huge, backup, but after that, well worth it). I use a $5/month service called Crashplan.

That's the three I have.

That's a good idea using an online data backup. Thanks Mike.

My wife thinks I'm a bit nutty about all this music stuff anyway. I wonder what she'd think if I told her that I need to have a separate HDD at a relative/friend's house. :what:

Just don't let her talk to my wife. There might be an intervention and we'll find ourselves in a foreign place!

If you want a hard copy, hard drives are small enough to fit into even small safe deposit boxes.

I have a thin 1tb drive that would fit just fine in a safe deposit box. Another great idea, thanks Gary.

I have several shadow copies of the database off-site.

Never hurts to hedge your bets; last thing I need is a catastrophic, unrecoverable failure.
