On another forum, I found this:

"There is no CD drive built in, but word is that the latest firmware update adds the capability for an external USB CD-ROM drive to be connected for direct ripping."

Are there any Sharks who have direct experience with this?

I was the one who posted that, and while I don't have any first hand experience with that new functionality it was confirmed by another poster. He stated that once you connect an external CD-ROM drive to the USB jack of the HAP-Z1ES, you simply insert a CD and you will then be prompted with ripping options. I believe that it will only rip to its internal hard drive.

Nice, good to hear. I have a USB optical drive but would probably just rip to my computer and transfer so I can keep a copy in "storage".

Thanks Bill.. nice to have it confirmed before ordering the drive, which I just did. My HAP-Z is located in my 2nd system at my SF "pied-à-terre" where I don't normally rip, so this will be a convenient addition.

Drives officially supported.

from Sony: Drives that have been tested include:

- Apple USB Super Drive MD564ZM/A (not current model)

- Buffalo BRXL-16U3

- Samsung SE-208GB/RSBD

- LG GP50NB40

I've tested Apple MD564LL/A does work (current model)
